Also, why are new methods using bacteria, fungi and plants being developed to extract copper?

1) Cheaper labour
2) less restricitve labour and safety laws
3) lower environmental standards
4) cheaper raw materials (because the iron ore minors work in Asia too, and the region has an abundance of coal)

Asia has less environmental regulation, so the
fuel can be cheaper and used more efficiently.
Asia has less regard for the worker, so expensive
safety requirements are not a factor.
Asia pays it's workers less.

Copper is getting expensive enough that those
recovery technologies have a chance of showing
a profit.

because the cost of labor is lower in Asia than in Europe (or the United States), the cost of making the steel is less.
