Definitely they can - if they want to. When your cat is trying to be as cute and clever as possible by rolling on her (his) back on the floor or creating new games for you to play with her, she is soaking in your affection and admiration like a sponge for love. When you are physically ill, injured, sad or even just a bit depressed, your kitty is much more likely to pay attention to you and post guard nearby than any relative, spouse or lover would do. Cats are faithful.
When you are laughing at your cat's antics, they are not always appreciative of your humor, especially if you are being sarcastic (as in "this cat is so lazy....."). Emotions are launched from your limbic brain, an area that is highly developed in animals. Cats and other animals know very well how to read you. Can you understand their emotions?

Yes, they do sense emotions. We don't speak cat, they don't speak human. However, body language is universal. Spend sometime observing cats you'll see what I mean.

Absolutely, I have a cat that knows when any of her people are sick or injured, many times she has curled up next to us and stayed with us till we were well or out of pain.

I believe so. The other day my neighbor had surgery and a male cat that is a stray, well I guess he is, he eats at my house everynight. He got in her lap and comforted her.

I guess so - but for every emotion, my cat's response is just to sit on me and shed a lot.

Whenever I have a bad day and go to sleep, I'll wake up to one of my cats snuggled up to me. They know.
