Well I can honestly say I do not like pit bulls. But I can also honestly say I do not hate them either.
It is one of those things people have to put up with, like it or not. I have never put anyone down for owning a pit or bully breed. But I have stated what happend to my cousins daughter ,first hand experience. I have stated the facts on some bans and restrictions.
I have seen a pit attack UNPROVOKED yes I said UNPROVOKED. It does happen if you wish to believe it or not. This dog was raised with kids. Nice dog I even though so. But they can turn when you least expect it. Have you ever seen a little girl with her face half ripped off? I am sure you have not. Well it is not a pretty site. Have you ever had to pry a pit off of a child face? It is not easy, they finally had to get a pry bar and shove in the dogs mouth and twist to get the dog to release its hold on the child. This child was just sitting on the couch with her grandmother when the dog came bounding in and attacked her. There were no signs of agression before that day. Yes the dog was put down and my cousin refuses to ever own one again.
What about these other attacks when the dogs have gotten out of their enclosures? Do you suppose the people they attacked provoked them? I highly doubt it. How about the police officers that were attacked going down an alley. The dog got out and attacked the, do ya suppose they provoked the dog? Doubt that too.
My other cousin other side of the family also owns one. Baby seems nice, she is a pretty dog I have to admit, but even they say she is unpredictable at times. I have 2 friends who also own pits (in the country, there is a ban in town). They say the exact same thing, they are great pets but very unpredictable. They also agree that it is not only in how they are raised it is also IN THE BREEDING. One friend says they will not own another pit, the other is undecided and my cousin says she doubts it as it is just too much of a hastle.
So yes, you have the good and bad. But they can still turn when least expected no matter how well trained people think their dogs are.
No need to "rehabilitate" me. I know first hand what "some of them" can do. I just choose to stay away from the breed. Try to tell people the facts on some bans or restrictions and the experiences I have had. If people refuse to believe then that is their right to do so.

DICKN200: being Atlanta is full of Michael Vick backin' thugs, I'm sure your pit bull bite & attack rate is high. The dogs are not at fault there. If you seen the ESPN Town Hall Meeting discussing Vick, you all would understand my statement. 99% of the room was black, and when the question was asked of the audience. "Do you think dog fighting should be legalized?" and women and children were clapping and yelling. It was sickening! I can honestly see why the pit bulls of Atlanta are screwed up. Look at the ignorant people that they are in the hands of.
Anyhoo, I hope you can touch base with some of the ignorance, it's a plenty.
Good Luck =)

1) Certain breeds in the category 'pit bull' were selectively bred for dog aggression. It's simply encouraging their prey drive to kick in and giving them a good feeling about it. Not to mention the access to illegal substances which some people in the fighting world most likely use on their dogs. So all in all it's not technically forcing them, it's encouraging the trait through genetics and 'conditioning'. ANY breed or mix of breeds can be used in fighting, 'pit bulls' are just commonly used and get the worst of the reputation for it. 2) I have seen others I like better. It's decent and may actually reach some although I doubt it. Most people involved in that style of life don't care about dogs and couldn't care less how cute they are. Until Dog fighting becomes a crime that has serious consequences idiots will continue to participate. 3) I believe in stricter enforcement of laws already in place as well as requiring a license/inspections to breed some of the bully breeds. I support OSL NOT BSL! 4) It's called a spring-pole and is basically tug-o-war without someone's shoulder being dislocated. I have one in my yard for my dogs. My neighbor and I both use it (it's on the property line) and neither of our dogs have dog aggression or can be classified as vicious (My male is fear-aggressive and has made progress in leaps and bounds. A stranger petted him the other day and he actually seemed to enjoy it.) Tug-o-war is a debate for many people. It does not encourage aggression on it's own however some people consider it an 'off-limits' activity for their dogs. There is nothing you can do unless the dog is allowed to run at large, shows aggression towards you while unsecured or actually goes after someone.

Sorry Bud, but I live in the real world... specifically Atlanta, GA. Hardly a week passes that there isn't a report on the local evening news about an unprevoked attack by a pit bull.
Last month for example, there were 3 such incidents. A small child playing in her yard was attacked by a pit bull who escaped from its owner, entered the yard and mauled the child. In another incident a woman working in her garden was attacked by a pit bull. She told reporters she looked up just as the dog attacked her.CAN YOU HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT THE CHILD OR THE WOMAN PROVOKED THOSE ATTACKS?
Look, I will agree that any dog raised in a loving environment, constantly shown kindness, fed regularly, and given positive reinforcement will in all likelyhood never attack unless provoked... BUT not all dogs are raised in that kind of environment. Judging from the interviews with these dog's owners it was obvious these dogs were not. And in the practical world not every dog is raised in a perfect environment.
So I don't know what fantasy world you live in, but in the world that I live in, pit bulls routinely commit unprevoked attacks. This is not a miseducated belief, it's statistics! So go ahead, try to re-educate me, I accept your challenge. My email address is: dickn2000a@yahoo.com

I am a big advocate of educating people about pit bulls. I have a mix (half rednosed pit half golden retriever) my step sons mom has a full blooded pit both are sweeties, but both were raised CORRECTLY....I think it isnt just about educating the public but the owners as well and the people who use this wonderful breed as sport should be used as sport themselves.

dickn200....not to sound bad, but like your said maybe in your area...atlanta or whatever, dog fighting is more prevelant. i know of a few people down there who see dog fighting as a sport, the meaner your dog, the better you are...so those dogs probably we not raised right. i live in New England and havent heard of such a thing happened up here for some time now. actually the last report on a dog attack was in connecticut and it was a girl that got sent to the hospital because she had her face ripped apart by a chiuaha....sooo dont be so close minded.
and to the question asker, as a mommy or the bully breed myself, im glad there are people out there such as you rasing awareness of the discrimination these dogs feel. i concider people who are against a breed racist. you dont like blacks your racist right? you dont like spansih people your racist right? you dont like asains your racsit right? well in my book, you dont like pits...thats the same ignorent discrimination. more power to you

.that's very sweet of you, unfortunately I don't think anyone will actually wanna do this, since the people who come on this board and have their minds "set" about "pit bulls", certainly don't wanna know any good facts about them. Look around, you can point those people out like nothing. at least I can....
.I have an american pit bull terrier and I get thumbs down on question like "what kind of dog do you have" simply for owning one.
.Nowadays narrow minded people are overpowering the open minded ones.....

I STILL think rather than trying to to convince John Q Public how great Pits are, it is BETTER to try to convince him that these dogs should be owned ONLY by experienced dog people!!

You dont need to tell me about bull terriers.I have staffies and 2 children and my staffies adore them. The bull terrier breed is a wonderful breed of dog. They will give you everything they have and ask for nothing in return. What drags them down is irresponsible owners.Blame the deed NOT the breed.
