I ask this question all the time, but in a different way. If there is a god, and if god intends on having you live for all eternity in spirit form, then what's the point of these few short years in physical form?

Think of death as graduation from kindergarten. God gave us this life as a stage to learn in and from while in a needy state. We learn how to love God and others while we are in a limited phase of existence. When we give or do for others, there is a cost to us. All human beings are flawed and therefore difficult to love. There is no proof of God's existence, so God is difficult to love. But if we stretch our spiritual muscles and learn how to love others and God, we will accept Jesus as savior because we know the truth about our flawed nature. Then we will be able to stand before the perfect God on the day of judgment because the price for our sins has been paid. Then we will live with God forever in a sinless state of true love.
PS: this will be in a bodily state, 'cause Jesus resurrection body was physical and even needed food and drink.

This reminds me of a friend of ours who owns 4 cats and recently bought 3 quail to keep in a cage in proximity to them. She expressed frustration in catching the quail, who had escaped, saying she wished it were easier. My husband said, "Well, shall we just skip straight to feeding the birds to the cats then?" She was offended but this is how her last birds perished, in the jaws of one of her cats.
You're living in the future, which is an illusion. Sure you'll die, but not today (hopefully), so what is the use of worrying? Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag, and smile, smile, smile!

Read some of the answers from Christians here : they ARE skipping life. They think this is just a dress rehearsal.

you were not born to die, you were born to live forever,
the problem is you now have sin in your body, you are infact a sinner, and the soul that sins will die
that is why you need a savior.
read revelation, who so ever will, let him come and eat of the tree of life
but I do understand the question, spent a lot of time thinking about that back in the day.....

We're not born to die, we're not born to serve a purpose, the purpose is decided by people (living people) after birth. Life has no purpose, it is simply what you make it.

The birth and death and life are mere physical based illusion. If you verify through inquiry and reason you will discover that your true identity is formless and non dual and it is only witness and substance of this illusory experience of birth death and life.
To skip this experience of duality the seeker has to know his true identity is not physical but the formless non-dual spirit or Atman.

It's a cycle. What you say is similar to someone suggesting "Up" exists without reference to "down." If one takes place, the other has to (and few realize the opposite to that is true, as well).
If there were no opposite, then it would just be, as is.
