they didn't make V6's back then, only inline 6's. It most likely had an inline 6, probably in the 250 ci range.

The engines available in the 65 where:
240 l-6, 289 v-8, 352 v-8, 390 v-8, and 427 v-8.

The 240 was not available in the 500 XL
The country Sedan (station wagon) added the 170 l-6, 200 l-6

The 352 was the most popular engine

So you can installl any l-6, 90 degree v-8, FE v-8 engine. If you dive into the part number for motor mounts or are willing to fab motor mount you can instal anything. There is no lack of room in one of these engine bays.

What are you looking for power or mileage? I would go for a 5.0 or 5.8 efi engine and a AOD or AODE transmission for this car. A late model police interceptor wiil give you all you need.

the leaf spring where dropped for the better coil springs in 65, never to return. The 65/66 had the same sharp edged styling. The 67 had a less sharp style with a pointed nose. the 68 retain the 67 body but lost the pointed nose and added sided marker lights. The 65-68 where on the same chassis and use the same glass.

The Galaxie Club of America would be able to help you along with Dearborn Classics they sell parts for your car. The Galaxie body also includes in 1965
Custom
Custom 500
Galaxie 500
Galaxie 500XL
LTD first year

Country Sedan
Country Squire (wagons)

All these are full sized Ford body cars.

You can add a nice 289 or 302 V8 just dress it up with 289 1965 valve covers no one will know. I own a 1964 Galaxie 500XL with a 1970 390 with a 1964 intake and valve covers, no one knows unless I tell them. The 289 / 302 probably weight less that the old inline 6 truck motor. Get an AOD and you will get great mileage.

cmrwash got it right, 240 1v inline 6 was the smallest motor offered in the full size Ford line. and would get the best mileage. It's a modern motor from the 4.9 line which was used until 1995

it can also be coverted to a 300 ci (4.9) by installing the larger crank kit.

It would deliver 18-20 mpg. and with a upgrade to a AOD or 5 speed od you could get up to 25 out of the beast..
