I can hardly pet my young male cat without him wanting to play-bite me. It's not hard biting, and he purrs as he does this. Sometimes though the biting does get a little carried away to wear it would start to hurt, and this is as he is still purring. The only time I can really raz and pet him like crazy since he never lets me, is when he wants water from our sink tap. Any suggestions without being mean to him? And no, I will not be giving him away because of this.

I do not rough play with him, I just simply want to pet him, and he makes it rough. It's not like I tackle him for him to want to play-bite.

Cats think that fingers are toys. Whenever you approach him, you should with closed fingers, then pet him. When he goes for your fingers to bite, give him a stern "no". If he doesn't stop, go away and he'll eventually get the idea.
Believe it or not, cats understand the word "no".

Don't tap him on the nose. Young cats do play by biting, so don't try to pet him when he is in "play mode". Save the petting for when he is getting sleepy. As he gets older and calmer, you'll be able to pet him more often.
Get a few interactive cat toys and play with him. Our kitty loves the Cat Aerobics toy (a wire with a dangly thing on one end and a handle for the human on the other). Any wand-type toy that you can wiggle around in front of the cat is good. Small, wadded up paper balls are great too - you toss them across the room and kitty zooms after them.

How old is your cat? If he's a kitten, he's just honing his skills for when he can attack and catch his prey.Or he may be teething. Get him some dangling toys to play with or a catnip mouse. you can also tell him every time he bites you "let go" or don't bite me.

Just don't play with him when he starts the biting. I have a female siamese that does the same thing. When she starts biting I ignore her until she starts being nice again....It usually works, though different cats and kinds of cats have different "cat"analities!

how young?
purring doesn't away mean happiness. he might be getting frazzled and not like what you're doing.
he probably wants something to hunt. i would give him a lot of toys and something else to bite on lol.
there are little soft chew toys for cats. most have cat nip in it though

My cat does the same thing, I lightly tap his nose (he hates that) and say NO. I have a young son so I had to make this a top priority. He will usually quit. Sometimes he really wants to play and be nasty and I tap his nose say no and walk away.

My cat Minnie used to do this do, and she was a Maine Coon and a large cat, so even her "love nips" could hurt. I found that a firm "NO" (not a shout, but in a louder firm voice) stopped her. Cats, despite their reputation for being aloof and uncaring, really do want to please their owners, and if they realize we are unhappy they will often change there ways. This seemed to work with Minnie, and it tends to be something they grow out of anyway, given time.

He is just playing with you... It is one way for them to bond with you... Sometimes cats just get annoyed, they bite to defend their self.... Our cat does that too..... He likes to bite...
But I think it is just one way for cats to have fun..

Lightly tap him on the nose when he bites, he'll soon learn to associate the "bad" nose tap with the biting and stop because he will want to play with you :@)
