The bible says that hell is an eternal place of torture. There are no second chances once you go there. That is why the day of salvation is now. Because if you don't repent and accept Jesus, you could die today, and will go to hell. The Bible is very clear on this. The righteous will live a life of eternity in Heaven, with all the promises of God, and the unrighteous will live a life of torment. Why should the wicked get to live in God's presence? When God has warned them over and over again what the punishment will be? God gives us all our lives to come to repentance and accept Him. I think He's pretty fair. I think He's more than fair. One day you will have to face Him, like everybody else, whether you choose to believe that or not in your lifetime. I, for one am ready for that day. I know I'll be standing with all the rest of the sheep on His right side. The Bible says the "goats" or the unrighteous, will be on His left side, then, they will be thrown into the Lake of Fire with satan and his fallen angels, the antichrist and the false prophet.
Are you ready? Which side will you be standing on? I hope it's the right. God bless

As you can see by the other answers there are many differing views as to what hell is or is not. I strongly suggest that you put aside your preconceived ideas and study the bible with an open mind to find the truth. It is there if you dig for it. That is what I did and the truth is amazing. The truth shows that God is not a tyrant or a cruel megalomaniac. He is a God of love and in the end there will be no more suffering or pain or death.

Revelation 21:4 (KJV) And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

We send ourselves to hell by our actions and not following God --God gives us every opportunity (and then some) to repent while we are on this earth. The Bible says Heaven and Hell are for all eternity, and our life here on earth is but a vapor, so yes, it is eternal; no, we don't get a second chance. I would rather follow the Bible and be wrong in the end than thumb my nose at God and find out the Bible was right all along. That being said, I am not for one second saying the Bible may not be right--I believe what it says with all my heart and soul, and I personally find it pleasing to serve God and be one of His children.

Could God really be so cruel as to...........?

Give justice? is this cruel? to give chance after chance for a life time? to give His own life to cover your debt which you could never do so, all the while allowing you the option to reject that gift? to allow you the same tender mercies during your life that the righteous have, though you don't deserve them?

so one rejects the gift, the warnings for a lifetime.... then they finally have to face the judge............ your guilty but what you should not be given the reward of a wicked life.........why do people think that somehow God is a push over and Hell is just a temporary thing?

Judgment is a FINAL decision. in our court system criminals are aware of the "3 strike rule" yet God tells us that He pardons us 7 x 70 which means completely & fully..... but God also tells us there come a time that we have exhausted our chances.....its called death (when spirit seperates from the body) then we will give an account of our life 7 receive the rewards accordingly.

did you choose life or death...... God gave you the answer befor & while you were going through the test we call life.

The punishment is not created by God, but by those who sin it wakes in them a pain to know what they have done wrong. As far as temporary or permanent, the answer is yes to both. I will explain.

“A man is his own tormentor and his own condemner. … The torment of disappointment in the mind of man [or woman] is as exquisite as a lake burning with fire and brimstone.”

There are two hells.
1. A temporary one. (otherwise known as spirit prison)
One is the temporary condition of the wicked between death and the resurrection......
David is promised that his soul would not remain in hell (see Ps. 16:10; Acts 2:27, 31), and it was promised that others as well would be delivered from spirit prison (see Isa. 49:8–9; John 5:25). This, in fact, happened when Christ opened the doors of hell to missionary work among the dead. (See 1 Pet. 3:18–19; 1 Pet. 4:6; D&C 138:6–37.)

2. A permanent one.
The other is the never-ending state of the wicked for whom there is no mercy because they, “like unto the son of perdition” (John 17:12), have rejected the mercy of Christ and would sell him “for silver and for gold, and for that which moth doth corrupt.” These are they, called perdition and the sons of perdition, who come out “in open rebellion against God” and “listeth to obey the evil spirit, and becometh an enemy to all righteousness. …

“Therefore [their] final doom is to endure a never-ending torment.” ( 2 Pet. 3:7; Rev. 20:13–15)
This is the second hell, or “second death.

This question has been asked in many different forms and the answers are always the same. The nonbelievers respond that there is no God or hell. The believers respond with a simple fact of life. Your future, including eternity, is in your own hands. The choices you make today determine the path your life takes here on earth and throughout eternity. No one else is to blame for the consequences of your choices-you are alone responsible. So choose wisely in each and every circumstance.

Study the Greek in the New Testament and the Hebrew of the Old Testament and you will find that eternal means exactly what it says -- eternal, forever, unceasing, time without end.

We would love to believe otherwise, but truth doesn't change to suit our whims and fancies or fantasies. God's word will never change because it is eternal just like He is. It is our business to believe it and obey it.

Eternal joy for those who do, and eternal sorrow for those who don't. Nothing could be simpler to understand.

Remember this: "God made a way of escape for those who have wisdom enough to take it." People who go to Hell go by their own choice. Beyond Hell is the Lake of Fire. I don't know about you but I think the simplest minded person who cares about themselves and others would certainly want to know beyond any doubt whether it is true or not and would do all they could to find out before they die.

There is no repentance or salvation beyond the grave.

God doesn't send us to Hell. We send ourselves there by disobedience. Hell is as eternal as Heaven, for if we could be "released" after a certain time, why would it have been necessary for Jesus to die and why would Abraham have told the rich man in Hell that he couldn't cross over to him because of a "....great gulf fixed between thee and we...." Sin cannot inherit the kingdom of God, therefore there HAS to be an eternal separation between sin and Heaven.

if you think about it, God sending people to hell(because of their sins) is actually not cruel but is the kindest thing he could do. What is the alternative to hell? Heaven right? Well if heaven is eternity in the presence of God, why would a sinner want to be there. God is gracious and says if a man doesn't want to live in his presence on earth, then why would i force them to spend eternity with Him.

Everyone is going to be held accountable come judgment day- This is the word of the Lord.
Sin is serious stuff- everyone needs to acknowledge this before it is too late. That is why Jesus says in the Bible "The kingdom of God is near, repent and believe the good news!"

p.s God is not cruel, just the opposite- look at what HE has done on the cross for us! For those that will believe, that will repent of sin, put their faith in Him, he gives us eternal life through Jesus Christ! That my friend, is LOVE!
