Last night, within the period of 20 minutes, four or five stories were put up that were totally fake. Yet they all had the same goal: making people believe that pit bulls are crazy attacking beasts. I am curious to know why they would do this. If you think pit bulls are dangerous, why would you need to MAKE UP proof? You are just trying to be heard, to hurt people, and to drive a nail into the coffin of the FIRST AMERICAN BREED! It is sooo sad. The truth is, banning pit bulls won't stop attacks, because the pit bulls who attack humans were (and you can't debate this, as I am a dog professional with years of experience) provoked by abuse or trained to do so, and whoever would train a dog to hurt people IS A CRIMINAL, who would not register their dog and would not care one bit if they broke the law by having a large breed dog. There is a reason why we have allowed dogs into our homes for 10,000 years, because they are totally stable creatures who never behave unpredictably-we just fail

to understand them. So, if your goal is to hurt people by removing these powerful dogs from the people who love them and train them properly, and YOU WANT CRIMINALS TO OWN THEM, then by all means, keep posting faking stories and spreading hype and promoting breed bans (which would only affect responsible owners who liscence their dogs). But please know, that the next time a powerful dog is abused and reacts, YOU SHARE THE BLAME. So again, I ask, why would you WANT this?

Bobby, are u a dog professional? No dog is born unstable. An unstable dog would not have been allowed to live with the pack and wouldn't be allowed to breed and pass along that trait. A dog REACTS to stimuli accordingly, YOU just may not be experienced enough to read the dogs signs.

One story was that this guy's collie was outside and he went out to unchain it (nuff said there), and the neighbor's pit lunged at his neck. He just happened to have a baseball bat in hand, or he picked it up, and somehow after the dog bit him in the neck, he beat it... His story was really bad and everyone picked apart the details immediatly. These stories were added last night by people who first came on to bash a woman for asking about Halloween costumes for her pit bull. They were totally fake and poorly made up, and it takes a sick mind to do this.

Again, it is not in a dog's nature to attack unprovoked. YOU may not understand what the trigger was, which is why I caution anyone who wants to own a powerful dog to first learn dog behavior. Sooo much grief could be avoided. Oh, and never let your children run up and pet strange dogs. Imagine if a stranger ran up to you and began touching you. You should always let a dog sniff you first, and don't look at them or move while they sniff. This is doggy manners.

Where did you see the stories?

I agree, it is all how you raise them. Are they strong dogs? Hell yes. But I've known really, really sweet ones. Only sweet ones, actually.

I completely agree. People neglect to take responsibility for their actions. Last week a supposed Pit Bull attacked a little boy who climbed the fence into the dogs yard to get his ball and apparently killed him. No adults were present and the dog was in it's own backyard which was fenced in and the dog was on a chain. No one would admit that the little boy was provoking the dog even though he diliberately entered the dogs yard and walked within range of the dog. The boys friends admitted that he was throwing the ball at the dog and that they had dared him to touch the dog. The police claimed the children were making up stories and deemed the dog vicious. Later the dog was shown and it was not a Pit Bull but rather a Labrador Retriever with a docked tail. My question is where were these kids parents when this happened? I guess we just leave four years olds to run around the streets and supervise each other today. Maybe if a parent was watching they could have made the little boy knock on the peoples door to get his ball, the common sense thing to do. I've also seen friends or simply people walking down the street who don't watch their kids when they are around dogs. These kids end up touching the dogs without asking. As a dog hadler I have a dog who is trained to attack with or without command and on a number of occasions had to lift my dog straight in the air to prevent a possible attack even though my dog didn't show any signs of attacking. Then when I tell the kids to get back the parents get defensive and ask why I'm yelling at their kid or why I'm choking my dog. Simple answer, people can't control their kids. Then these kids grow up to be irresponsible and continue to make the same mistakes throughout life. Granted there are owners who should be held responsible too especially those who can't supervise or keep their dogs in their yard. I can't even walk my dog around the neighborhood because of so many loose dogs. Being loose all the time also creates territorial behavior resulting in attacks. I stick to letting my dog run in the back yard only while supervised.

Dogs will only attack under three circumstances; stimulated prey drive- chasing animals or children who make sudden and fast movements, fear- the cause of most dog attacks. People approach a dog without knowing it causing the dogs fear and anxiety to increase and fight or flight to kick in, and finally civil- the dog has been trained to attack without the use of equipment. Oh, and look I just got a thumbs down from someone who's in denial and doesn't want to blame human error for provoking dog attacks. It's a shame because either they or their family will probably get bit one day and they will have no one to blame but themselves.

It's kinda hard to fake puncture wounds! I think it is terrible for people to let them roam around unattended. I know not all of them are bad but they are aggressive by rights. Check the breed standards. Anyway, when I hear of an attack whether it be a Pit or Rottie or Dobie or even a Lab of all things attacking someone I always think of a loose, unattended, undisciplined maybe even abused dog. I think they are like kids you have to teach them! So if some people are not responsible enough to teach and take care of them they shouldn't own them. Unfortunately it makes them all look bad. When a percentage of the fault is the owners. So maybe they should be governed for there own sake. as well as the safety of the innocent people and other pets too! But one can always go crazy too as any dog can. They are just very powerful and even deadly when they want to be.

Firstly, how do you know the stories were fake?

Secondly, I agree with you about pits in general. Some of the sweetest dogs I have known have been pits. If they are aggressive it is because humans made them that way.

The media does the same thing to gun owners by sensationalizing any story involving violence with firearms while totally ignoring the fact that well over 98% of all privately owned firearms are never used in the comission of a crime and there are many legitimate recreational uses for these pieces of sporting equipment.

I get annoyed whenever the media tries to practice social engineering through distorition of the facts (which, of course, means that I am often annoyed...).

Scare tactics were used to start a WAR in this country- what makes you think people won't use them for something as comparably insignificant as a breed ban?

Sensationalism sells.

I thought the Carolina Dog/American Dingo was the first American breed. It is the one the Native Americans domesticated.

you wanna hear something funny? during the mike vick hype, i would watch american news and they would have all these people talking about how pit bulls are so crazy and thats how they are. horror stories basically. watching canadian news, i would see an interview with a veterinarian or a professor saying exactly what you have said. americans are scared stupid because of the news they are watching. selective journalism. all large dogs scare me (i was bitten by a black lab when i was 10), but the one dog i'm comfortable around is a pit bull and hes a big suck. it isn't the breed, its the owners

i personally believe pit bulls are gentle loving family pets. they are excellent with children, but to many bad people get them for image and fighting, its such a shame as people do get brainwashed into thinking they are bad. ban the deed not the breed. unfortunate for me i live in england where they are already banned, i used to have a pit bull she was the best dog i ever had she had so much personality. there is just as many attacks from other dogs.they just dont splash it all over the papers & telly

Pitbulls ARE dangerous. That is a fact. As to why people would make up stories, I don't know. It could be an attention thing, they could have had someone actually hurt by a pitbull, or they could even be true? There is no way of really knowing. And as a dog professional, you should know that even unprovoked pitbulls will attack at times. There are several documented cases of such. Even so, I would provoke my St. Bernard when I was younger, and I was never bitten once. My cousin went to pet a pitbull who was supposedly friendly, and got bitten.

You know I agree with you 100% I have a bull terrier and everyone tells me these breeds are vicious.I BEG TO DIFFER my baby wouldnt hurt a soul. my dog is very intellegent and responds to pets and hugs. we have children in the home and it has never tried tp nibble of a single finger and obeys me.HOWEVER...Ive seen a family around the block that abuse their dogs and rile them up to attack anyone who crosses there lawn.So I agree raise your animals right and they will be right. they have brains and they fill it with a knowledge they have been given.I fill mines with love and nurture.
