We had this problem for about a year. The medication was expensive and it didn't work. The Tinactin and other related creams worked for a while, but then it came back. What finally got it gone for good where these sulfar dips. They stain the cats fur and the stuff smells like rotten eggs, but a dip a week for a month finally got rid of it. I think they sell if for use on horses, so we diluted it.

I had to deal with this for six months. It took three months of twice a week baths to get rid of it on my kitten then my adult cat immediately got it and it took another three months for it to go away from her. The biggest problem I had was I was unable to clean the house as diligently as I needed to. You must wash and vacuum everything you can every day. Clean everything you can with heat and bleach. For everything else, do your best and pray. Diligence in the home is just as important as diligence with you and the animals. I don't know what shampoo you were using but I used Malaseb on my cats and it seemed to work ok. Plus I was putting antifungal cream on them twice a day. Another thing that hampered my efforts was my kitten had ringworm on her face, it was right by her eye and mouth. Don't use the pills unless nothing else works because it can have some nasty side effects. Keep trying. It's very frustrating and you are at the end of your rope but you can do it. Just take a deep breath and start over. Today is day 1. Now go from here.

My vet told me it can be cured by using Tinactin or a similar anti-fungal for athlete's foot. But make sure the cat can't lick it off.

There’s also a home remedy:

Clip hair around the ringworm patch. Once a day dip a cotton swab into a tincture of goldenseal (can buy at GNC or similar place) and paint the entire area. Limit the treated area to a dime size spot on cats and small animals and up to a quarter size spot on large dogs. If there is more than one spot, alternate treatments daily from one spot to the other

I'd recommend a second opinion. Ringworm is easily treated with a prescription cream usually applied once a day. It is extremely contagious to humans and other animals. 2 weeks is usually the normal treatment time. If it's been 5 months then something is wrong. Get another opinion from another vet.

If it's going on 5 months now, are you sure that everything the cat was/in on in the house has been thoroughly cleaned too? If you're putting the treatment on the cat but it can still go lay on a spot that's covered in the fungus, it won't go away. Sometimes the cases are just harder to treat but by 5 months you should see some improvement.

Call the vet and tell him/her that what you have tried so far hasn't worked. Maybe it's time to try the dips. Also, make sure that your cats aren't getting reinfected from touching the infection around the house. For example, if your cats sleep on the same bedding all the time, make sure that you wash the bedding with hot water and bleach to kill the fungus so they won't reinfect themselves when they lay on it.

When my cat had it I washed him in Bedadine, and it went away pretty quickly. My own case of it went on for nearly a year! It just kept coming back. Take the cat to a different vet for a 2nd opinion and see if they suggest a different treatment.
