My fiance and I have both been married before, but his first wedding was a small Justice of the Peace wedding. He wants this one to be done right. (I would actually prefer smaller, but I compromised on this). We both already have children, I am finally puruing my dream of going to college, so money is tight. We mostly have the wedding planned, and due to wonderful friends and family, are able to have a very nice wedding for a budget that is manageable. The only question I have is, is it ok to use diposable plates and silverware, should I wrap the silverware in the napkins, or with a ribbon, or just leave them for the guests to grab individually, and what plate should I get, paper (real good, thick paper) or plastic?

He has like 350 people on the guest list, I am trying to talk him into cutting it down to like 200. It isn't going to be real fancy foods. Actually, our favorites. He loves chicken and I love pasta, plus some salads, rolls, swedish meatballs, etc....

Hi Jennifer and congratulations!

Wow!! 350 people is huge!! I hope you will have time to spend with your guests...

In any case...I live in a small town where wedding here are huge as well. Although I don't like it, people here do disposable plates, silverware and napkins too.

Given your food choices of chicken, pasta, meatballs....get the Chinette plates. It is way to hard to eat pasta and meatballs off of a plastic plate -- I've tried. They slide all over!

I know there is no real way to "fancy" things up....but get the ones with a little colored border on it anyway.

Also...if you can afford it.....I would get napkins in one of the "colors" you have chosen....like the color of the bridesmaids dresses. Then, yes, wrap the plastic silverware in the napkin and tie it with a small piece of silk ribbon. At least that way, there is a little color....not just everything white!

Good luck!

How many guest's are you having? I'm thinking you could borrow from your friends and have each table set up with a different place setting complete with silverware.
If you don't like that idea then go to Costco and buy nice thick paper plates and plastic utensils. I like the idea of wrapping them in a pretty napkin with a ribbon.

Best Wishes,

Susie

My sister had clear plastic plates, silverware and cups.
She had a casual but elegant reception and it looked lovely.
I think rolling the silverware is a nice touch.
That being said, you might want to take a look at renting.
You might be surprised.
Check out the link below for some pricing ideas.
Cheers and Good Luck!

My wife and I had a "shotgun" wedding on a budget, so we didn't have much time to plan. We used paper and plastic and set up the food buffet style. come to think of it, I have never been to a wedding that had real silverware and plates, and I have been to some pretty nice ones.

I had disposable plates and silverware at my wedding. We got ours from a caterer that is specially made to look exactly like real china and silverware. I'm telling you it really looks like the real thing. You can't tell the difference til you actually pick up a fork and realize that it is much too light to be silver. I actually opted for this so that the clean up would be much easier.

i think plastic is much better than paper any day... also, i think it's a very nice touch to wrap the utensils in the napkin you've chosen, wrapped with a ribbon. maybe you can even find a local restaurant to host the reception, that way it'll be super nice, and everybody can pay for their own meal!

Do the paper and plastic, but wrap the cutlery anyway, just because it's pretty that way.

Wait - you need to say what type of wedding you are having before we can say if disposable dinnerware is acceptable. If it's anything more than a BBQ, then no - it's not acceptable.

chinette is nice, you could wrap the utensils in a napkin, and use a ribbon.
