I'm considering spending the ridiculous amount of money required for an automatic self-cleaning litter box, but I wanted to get some opinions from people who have actually tried them. Do they actually work/function correctly? If so, which brand is the best (but not too expensive)? What problems have you had with them? Do you think it's worth the price?

I had one for a short time years ago -- it scared the heck out of my cats!

Now, the Cat Genie -- I like the idea of it. It only activates once a day, instead of each time the cat uses the box. I like the idea of it and think it would work much better.

In answer to your question I do not think they are worth the money. They do not always collect all that needs to be scooped and they scared my friends cats to the point they were hesitating going to the litter box. She had a Scoop Free litter box and she only used it for about a month then went back to regular litter.

We use litter bags in the litter box and scoopable litter and it works great. I only scoop once a day and once a month we just lift the bag out and put a whole new one in with fresh litter. Very little fuss and no mess.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Yes, I used the LitterMaid and you can have mine. I switched to a regular litter box after all the problems and expense. Not only is the LitterMaid itself expensive, but take a look at the price of the plastic waste receptacles that you have to buy in addition! Also, I found that I was paying more attention to the LitterMaid and it's maintenance than I was to a regular litter box.

It just wasn't worth the time, effort or expense in my opinion.

I totally agree with Julie. And also the Littermaid was too small for my 14 lb. cat to use. She could barely get into it and would end up going against the side or over the side, then when she tried to cover up her mess, litter would fly everywhere. Definitely not worth it. I have a large covered box now and it is great.

I have had 2, both were given to me by others that didn't like them. I didn't either! You still have to empty the part that holds the feces and you still want to wash out the box too. If you want to get something to save time and make things easier for yourself then there are probably several things that would be cheaper and much more helpful than that. Cleaning a box isn't that bad and you must not think so either or you wouldn't have even got a cat. You can handle it !

I did that once my cat looked at it like an alien from outter space invaded his litter pan and started going on the floor. He didn't want anything to do with it. Just use a regular litter pan..its not worth loosing the money over

if your cat is in the least bit skittish about noises or things that are different i wouldn't recommend getting one. my cat is skittish and when he used it and it started making noises and moving he refused to go anywhere near the room it was in. i finally had to empty it out and move it to a totally different part of the house. it took me almost a month for him to use a litter box again. we still have ours, and he uses it, but it is not plugged in.

Not really. I just use a plain plastic box and a good litter. Keep it close to the toilet and scoop it into the toilet when in that area.

I have tryed them all they are not worth it!
the poop allways gets stuck in the cleaning claw and the inserts pop out and then you get the poop on top and over filling so not worth the money.
