I will put these verse in context by adding the surrounding verse starting with Matt 26:55 and ending with verse Matt 26:68.
Jesus is arrested. Verse 55.
False witnesses were produced. The last told two telling the court that Jesus will destroy temple and rebuild it in three days. Verses 59-61.
Now we get to the high priest asking Jesus is he was the Messiah (Christ). Verse 62
Jesus confirms that He is the Messiah and that they would see Jesus returning at the end times. Verse 63
High Priest pronounces Jesus guilty. Verse 64
And ask the Sanhedrin to concur. Verse 65
They answer Verse 66-68.
This is what Matthew in 26:55-68 records. There is no "thinking" or "interpreting".

First, Jesus famously does not answer Yes to this question, the NIV inserts this incorrectly.
Second, capitalizing Son of Man and taking it to be Jesus referencing himself in the third person is a tradition that was invented context-free, ignoring what it means to Judaism. It means humanity in-general.
What Jesus is claiming in verse 64 is that ALL humans are Sons of God. Which is true (see Psalm 82:6). THAT'S the blasphemy.

Verse 65 is one f the most absurd verses ever written into the Bible. No meticulous High Priest like this one in his right mind would ever rend his clothes in public in open defiance to the Law of God! This story proves that whoever wrote or edited the Gospel of Matthew had well defined ulterior motives of slander against the ZEALOUS LAW KEEPING JEWS!... especially the High Priest!
Leviticus 10:6 (KJV) And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, NEITHER REND YOUR CLOTHES; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled.
In he New Testament there is no greater sin than to be a Jew!

Because Jesus said He was the Son of God, and that He would be sitting at the right hand of God, which would make Him equal to God. The Pharisees charged Him with blasphemy because they didn't believe Jesus was who He said He was.

Verse 64 is where Jesus claims to be God. For this, he was killed by the High Priest for the sins of the world in accordance with Biblical protocols and in fulfillment of biblical prophecy.

The High Priest wanted to prove the charge of blasphemy because that is what they could convict Jesus of. And according to Jewish law He deserved to die. Earlier Pilate had found Him to be innocent and wanted to release Him.
"The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God." (John 19:17)

His works proved who He is, yet they still did not believe Him. Why? 1)they did not understand the 'time of day', 2)Because THEY wanted the power, and thought they knew that, when Messiah came, they would rule the world(look in Acts 1, 'Will you now restore the kingdom of Israel?'). Except for the disciples, who followed Him throughout His 'time', they did not understand about bringing in 'the lost sheep of Israel', and the time of the restoration of things.
They accused Him, then, of blaspemy, because He said that He could speak for the Father(making Himself equal to Yah, not YAH HIMSELF, and not ABOVE Yah), which is the power that a first-born SON would have. They were in the dark then, and most are still in the dark, not understanding this truth.

The one who first wrote this transcending story so you are reading it today was just some jewish story teller.
What makes you believe he was serious in writing all those myths?
I dont think our jewish story teller expected you to believe it literally either.am sure if he is still alive and reading this on Yahoo answers today,he would be laughing his head off at you trying to decipher a myth he meant for literature only as other Greek myths like Zeus one.
Who would sit next to God ?
Obviously Jesus didnt say that, our fellow story teller put those words in his mouth.By the way, writers like to twist things After all, isnt that's what makes writing enjoyable?
I dont blame them.

This is where Jesus is being tried. I believe that Jesus was referring to the Great White Throne of Judgment in verse 64. In verse 65, we see that the pharisees thought his statements were heresy.

In less formal language:
The high priest said to him, "Dude, spill it. Are you the Son of God or just full of it?"
"True dat," Jesus replied. "But dig this: Next week, I'll be swingin' from a star with my girl and coming on the clouds."
Then the high priest ripped off his clothes for no apparent reason. "B.S., dude! Why we listening to this? Get this mofo outta here."
The End.
--
Basically, the priest is upset.
