I have two almost identical Dell desktops. One needs a fresh install of XP, but I could only find the OEM disk that came with the OTHER Dell. Can I use this one or will the registration key already be registered and make it unusable on the second machine?

As long as you are using the key that came with the computer you should be OK. However sometimes those keys only work with the version of the OS on the CD.

Even if you lost the Restore CD, keep in mind that Dell places a sticker on the case with the MS Windows product key. Unless you lost the sticker, you have a valid product key there.

I haven't used a Dell recovery CD in a while so I can't recall if you enter the product key on recovery or not. If not, Microsoft does provide a utility to change the key after install (Google for "microsoft change product key" and you should find it). You don't want to run with the same product key or you'll have problems obtaining updates from the Microsoft site (or worse, they can cripple the OS of all systems using that product key). Given Microsoft's track record of security holes and the fact that it is a big target for hackers, malware, and adware, you don't want to miss out on the software updates.

If the two systems are very close, you may be able to use the restore CD. Expect some odd errors that may require locating drivers and some headaches to get them installed. What you might find easier is contacting Dell and ordering a replacement restore CD kit.

I hate to say it, but the second choice you mentioned is most likely correct. When each serial key is used, it is registered with Microsoft and can therefor not be used again. Even if you were to install XP, use the key and get the operating system working.. you wouldn't be eligable for any updates of any kind. Which is bad if your running a Windows system.
