Since there is no mandatory "registration" of legally owned firearms in the US, no one actually knows the answer to that question with a degree of certainity.
Be sure to put that in your report.....all figures you come up with will be Estimates by people that may....or may not....have a political agenda for producing their numbers.
For example, a collector that I'm very close to (:-) owns dozens of collectable and historic firearms that have been purchased from private individuals over the course of 25 years that have never been "through the system" as it were, so there is no official records of them.... although all are perfectly legal.
Also, the BATF, the federal agency that is charged with the well-known "background checks" for firearm purchases is prohibited from creating a database of who purchases what. This would be a de-facto registration and it's been speciffically prohibited as un-Constitutional.
You should find useful data for your paper on these pages. In order to make your paper credible, you should always note the sources of your info....

Most papers regarding this are based on hypothetical data created by anti-gun liberals.
Check out "More Gun's Less Crime" a book by John Lott PhD a sociologist at the University of Chicago that probably has the most accurate statistics to date.

In Kansas, I would say probably about 85%, and the ones that own guns have enough to make up for the ones who don't. The percentage probably goes up the farther north or south you go.

Look elsewhere. You won't get an accurate number by a random poll. The UN collects statistics on violence including guns per capita. Look there. Btw, N'awlins has long been the murder capital of the US, not Philly.

All loyal and patriotic americans own firearms and support our Bill of Rights and freedoms. Only those who wish to destroy our nation do not.

The vocal minority is probably under 20%. The overwhelming majority don't own guns.
