The 12th imam will be the next moslim leader. A decedent of Muhammad, the 11th imam went into hiding many centuries ago. Shiite teachings state that the 12th imam will be a decendent of muhammed and will usher in an era of war, drive Israel into the sea, convert the world to Islam, rule for 7 years, and then usher in the return of Jesus (who will be Islamic, not Christian).
Two years before the 12th imam reappears, there will be global war. The 12th imam will bring peace at the end of the war.
The 12th Imam is supposed to come from Iraq and is supposed to appear within the next 3 years or so.
Ahmadinejad thinks this inevitable.

He is the Mahdi the grandson of Mohamed who was killed and buried in what not is Iraq in a well as a child. This was when the split between Sunni and Shite came about on who should lead Islam. Shite thinks he will come back and lead the world under sharia if the 12er's bring about the end of the world and 2/3 rds of the people die. Then and only then will he come back to rule. Iran's Mach moud Amadimajad is a member of this group and if you pay attention to all of his speech's in Iran and the UN and every where he talks of this and his return.

The 12th Iman is a descendant of Ali, the adopted son of Muhammad. There is no proof of his existence, and the 11th Iman died without any sons. It is believed that the boy was born and able to become invisible, and will return to lead the Islamic World back to prominence. The current President of Iran is a strong believer in the myth. It is believed he appears to true believers and whispers in their ears secret instructions to help guide them.
