I must be more tolerant than many, because I think everyone has a right to their beliefs. I have friends of all faiths. This week, someone began such a conversation about their beliefs. When I began to share mine, this person basically told me to "have a good life" and walked away. I guess I am better off without such people in my life but I can't help feeling like a pariah at times. I pray for them and move on. How do you deal with such a situation?

You weren't the one being intolerant - he or she was. Screw him or her...lol. I'm sure I probably disagree with your religious beliefs as well; but they're yours. If you don't preach, we're cool.

Not to say that certain beliefs don't tend to create certain personality traits that I frankly despise; but I make the call based on the personality, not the beliefs. I've known many people who claim to hold beliefs that would theoretically make them complete jerks; and yet there's a disconnect somewhere, because they're actually still cool.

People like primoa on the other hand...I'm sorry, but it's obvious that this guy really wants an insulated life surrounded exclusively by people who will never challenge his thinking. He says as much in his answer. I would never want to be in such a box. The more I know about other people, the bigger my universe is.

discussing the matter of believes is a delicate and sensitive issue, I would not discuss my believes with persons who are not serious, fanatics, and those who doesn't show respect for others' believes.

Better to cut it short with them or direct the conversation to social or scientific issues.

Don't bother when they turn their backs and go away, no problem, there will be other persons who are respectable, interested and they walk in hurry towards you.

There are persons who are good listener, keen to know about others' believes, and they have common sense, those persons are the proper one to discuss our believes with them.

One more comment ; I must have enough knowledge about my believes to be able from expressing my point of view properly to the others, I shall expect questions and I should be ready with the suitable and convincing answers.

I figure it's their loss, not mine. If they can't accept me as I am, then I don't really want them around anyway.

But I will admit, that is a very rare thing. Usually people have better reasons than faith differences for not wanting to be around me, and vice versa. Lack of mutual interest is a biggie. As is my introversion.

Yes, but more because of my lack of 'spirituality,' depending on how you define it.

I am an atheist, and in the US it's still socially acceptable to be prejudiced toward them.

i dont know i'f i'd call it "losing" someone or just drifting apart. sometimes we grow apart from people, our needs change as do theirs and we each go our separate ways.
it's part of growing up and part of living. we cannot "keep" everyone we meet because that would make our life stagnant and frozen.
just move on and open yourself to new opportunities and new people.

Yes, my sister refuses to talk because I don't share her beliefs. It's her way of punishing me.

Yes....I did.

But God replaced those friends with people of like & precious faith.

I miss some of the acquaintences I had not too long ago......but we parted company because I love the Lord.....and they do not. We eventually ended up with nothing in common.....and they were dragging me down into the old way of life
