The death penalty is a serious deterrent for would be drug dealers so to a certain extent it has worked.
However there is a serious flaw in its implementation - the law doesn't differentiate between voluntary drug dealing and those who have been forced or misled. There are people (usually gambling addicts) who owe big sums of money to syndicates and have been forced to peddle or traffic drugs to pay their debts. And they are those who don't know what they are carrying because of their youth. A recent case was a Nigerian boy (17 years old) who was asked to bring some traditional medicines to another person. The medicines turned out to be drugs. He was sentenced to death nevertheless.
I wonder sometimes how they were so easily caught? Were these people used as diversions for bigger drug deals?

If we didn't impose hard capital punishment, i don't think Singapore would be what it is today.
It has worked, but i am not saying you can't find pushers. You can. I know of places where you can.
But you see it's not that easy to get Dope. It's done quite discreetly. If you ask people who do drugs, they'd tell you it's easy to get them. That's just because they know who to get it from. I only knew the names of the places to get Dope last week. Before that, i didn't know anything. I thought you needed to know someone, who knew someone, who knew someone, who knew someone. Oh you get what i mean.
But i've not personally gone down to those places to give it a try. I doubt i will.
I think we should extend the Death Penalty to rapists, drug pushers and other perpetrators of heinous crimes (in Singapore). This is my opinion.
Second chances should be given to those who deserve it. I think second chances only fill the Rehab Centres with Junkies who are repetitive offenders of the Law.
I can say the situation is way well under control, because we are a small country, we're easily contained. If you do live here, you have to admit, we are amongst the "Higher" asian countries.

It has definitely helped in a way to reduce the incidence of drugs in Singapore. Of course, this is not 100% full-proof, so the relevant authorities have to constantly be on the look-out and to conduct raids as and when necessary.

The dope dealers are seldom caught. Only the mules. Their lives are cheap and expendable. If your son is in Singapore, 3rd conviction will get him caned and jail.

It wont work in America. The attitude of the criminal is that they should kill witnesses. They would be vulnerable to the same penalty and they would eliminate all witnesses.

No for one reason only the little man gets caught. Another fact, only the people who have little money are addicts. Does this mean people with have stronger wills? The truth they have money to hide the facts.
