You have not given a whole lot of information. Cats are creatures of habit and if he has changed his habit then something is definitely wrong.
I agree with your other response that possibly something outside frightened him. Cats have to feel secure and safe or they can actually make theirselves sick with worry.
Is the stool normal or loose? Has the cat picked certain places or is it like he just can't hold it and goes where the urge hits him? Have you introduced anything new to the house - other pets, children, partners?
If you have analyzed all the answers to these questions and not come up with a possible reason then you should take him to a vet. There could be a digestive problem that you are not aware of and this might be an early sign of it.
Good luck to you and your cat.

Any time there is a major change in the way a cat eliminates, the FIRST step is ALWAYS to see a vet. Cats are creatures of habit, and they will stick to those habits unless something is wrong. I learned that if my cat Kizi peed on my bed, she probably had a UTI. Have the vet check your kitty over. If there's nothing wrong with his health, then look around outside. Is there a new animal in the neighborhood that has made going outside a scary proposition?
Ultimately, your cat will be healthier and live longer if you keep him indoors fulltime. It might be tough to litter train him later in life, but give it a good try. Here's a site to help you out.

Are you leaving the cat alone? My brother-in-law was in the hospital for an extended stay. I stopped by his house to feed/water the cat and clean the litter box. Everything went okay for the first few days and then the cat started pooping everywhere. I thought maybe she was lonely, so I turned the TV on and left it on for her. No more pooping problems after that.

Even though he usually goes outside, you still need a litter box inside the house since he is inside lots of the time.
If something outside scared him then he most likely does not want to go outside for a while.
