Gold, frankinsence and myrrh... 3 of the most precious gifts available in that day.

We all know what gold is, so I won't go there... But I suggest reading the following pages. These herbs were given in prophecy that Christ would be injured, died, and buried with such herbs being used to prepare his body...

Frankensence: http://botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/f/franki31.html#med
Myrrh: http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/m/myrrh-66.html

These were and still are, even today, very valuable herbs.

By the way... there were more than 3 "wise men"... The Bible doesn't say how many there were... and they weren't all kings, but some were magi or scientists and astrologers who followed the stars and their prophecies.

You might wanna check your facts...there wasn't three wise men..the passage reads "magi"...don't say how many...there were gifts of 3 types...gold, frankinsense and myrrh...all of which were costly and obtained on the trek to see Him. This story reminds me of another visitor to Israel, the Queen of Sheba who came to meet with Solomon. (I Kings 10:2) She also brought gifts including gold and spices. The Magi followed in the same steps, perhaps being spiritually aware that One "greater than Solomon was here" (Matthew 12:42). Together, the three types of gifts represent three roles of Jesus the Messiah: His kingly office is represented by gold, His divinity by frankincense, and His manhood by myrrh. "They offered him incense as their God; gold as their king; and myrrh, as united to a human body, subject to suffering and death." Also, it's clear that the providence of God is seen in these gifts. It provided the means necessary for a long and expensive journey into Egypt, and to sustain Joseph, Mary and Jesus in a foreign land where they would stay for a considerable time. He is God who became our King to become our sacrifice...now He is all three. Love in Christ, ~J~

I can not believe how uneducated the ones above me are. Gold for he was / is/ King

Frankincense was used to embalm as well as Myrrh these were only for the Most privileged. Even in Birth, they knew he was destined to die. But not in the normal way.

Gold to show his Divinty
Frankincense to show his Kingship
Myrrh the spice they annoint the dead body with.
They were showing what they learn from predictive prophecy of the life ,death and resrrection of the Messiah. These Gentiles (probably because of Daniel) knew the scriptures better than the Jewish heiarchy.
No where does it say "Three wise men" .There could have been many.Caspar ,Melchar and Balthdezar are just one of many, man made traditions made up by the Roman Catholic church.

Do you know how much that stuff costs?

The Myrrh alone was worth a fortune on the secondary market

The term 'wise' is a mis-nomer.
Those 3 were astrologers, sorcerers.
The ordinary folk credited them with more knowledge and insight than they really had.
If they were really wise, they would have gone directly to Jesus, instead of to Herod.

If you read ths story carefully you will realize that they actually got lost, stumbled on the stable pretty much by accident and gave him what they were carrying in their pockets
Not sure there is anything wise or generous about that
