Cassy i would like to see your cat do half the stuff my dog can, and cats do scratch you they are retarded. Who wants to try and play with an animal and if you pet it anywhere but the very top of it's head it bites you. My dog would never bite anyone, My cat would and scratch to. So now whos smarter. Not you

I don't know laying around all day only eating seems pretty smart to me. So what if a dog can do tricks? A cat gets you to wait on it hand and foot.

Just for the record, I love dogs, I have one right now so I'm not knocking them but to me cats are more spoiled.

Cats are not dumb. They are simply very efficient. In the wild, they spend only a couple hours a day hunting - they're that good. And they don't need to do it in packs. My cats have learned to open every cabinet in the house, even the ones with latches. They fetch. They know what my tone of voice means, and hide when they know I'm fixing to do something they don't like. They are loving and devoted in their own way, but by nature they are very independent, and can be left alone all day without tearing apart the house.

Dogs are pack animals. Their instincts cause them to desire connection with the pack leader - and in your house that's hopefully you. So they will do things to please you. They are not necessarily smarter - certainly not cleaner, but if you need to be adored, a dog is the right pet for you. They are much more high maintenance - you will need to walk them, and it's very hard on them if you leave them alone too much. I'm single and work full-time, so I don't have a dog, because I don't think it would be fair to the dog for me to leave it alone 10 hours a day. I'll get a dog when I retire!

I own a cat-dog. :-D His name is Koda, a purebred Siamese which are known for being the dogs of the cat world.

He plays fetch, talks a LOT, and is very mischievous... smarter than any dog I've ever known. He has figured out how to open doors, get the lid off the hamper so he can crawl in for a nap, and loads of other goofy things in addition to how to get me out of bed in the morning for his breakfast... even on Saturday I'm up at 6:30 because of him. His sister isn't much better.

I've only met a very few dumb cats. They're not lying around doing nothing... they're plotting against people that think they're dumb.

cats are actually a lot smarter then dogs, they can learn tricks and listen just like dogs the only thing is cats are not as social as dogs and dogs want to please humans (there master) cats live life the way they want to.

my boyfriends cat comes when i call it and she greets me at the door. but all she does is lay around or follow me until i feed her. im not a big cat person but since ive met this cat they got me more interested in them,

To call a cat dumb makes me think that you have not had cats in your life for very long.

Cats can be very intelligent including understanding some of what you say. They can and will come when you call their name.

Unlike dogs who happily wait for you to feed them, walk them and clean them up......a cat will stalk its prey, feed slowly during the day so you can leave his food down all the time, he uses a litter box and covers up his business, cleans himself continually. They do not bark at the neighbors, don't sniff crotches of your friends and if you are going away for the weekend you don't have to get a pet sitter.

The give you unconditional love, cuddling to you and purring when you pay the slightest bit of attention to them.

They are highly intelligent creatures who communicate with meowing. If you are around them long enough you will see your cat has a different meow for different reasons. One will let you know his food bowl or water bowl is getting low, one will tell you his litter box needs cleaned and one will let you know he wants to be petted.

A cat may not do tricks but it is a lot of fun watching a cat play with a ball of twine, playing with him and a long string, or him with a tiny mouse cat toy. And some cats will fetch a favorite toy and bring it to you. You just must be patient and learn what intelligence and talents your cat has.

Good luck to you and your cat.

Beg to differ here. Cats are extremely smart and trainable as dogs are. I have taught my 3 cats to sit and beg for their yeast tablets. They also can go out on leads and harnesses.
My Ragdoll is also a bloody good guard cat. If any-one is near my home at night, he will growl like a dog, till the danger as gone. 1 night he wouldnt stop growling, i looked out of window and saw a kid trying to pinch my car,he soon shot off, when i set my alarm off on the car and turned s/light on. Thanks to my raggy, my car was not knicked.
Cats do listen, they also bring and fetch, just as a dog can. My oldest is 1 for this game.
Another thing about cats as well, They dont unlike some dogs (without Provication.) go up to a child./stranger and Bite them or even worse maul them to death like dogs can and will do.
Cats will only hurt if they hurt.
Cats are also extremley sensative to electric changes in humans that suffer from Fits, dogs are to, but a cat is more likely to react quicker than a dog. Now who is the smartest?

TGF Spartacus
I have owned dogs, my last 1 was my best mate same as my cats are.
My cats have never ever scratched me, thats because i treat them with utter respect same as with any domesticated animal, they are still wild underneath. Also you cannot Train a Cat to do Cat fights, unlike (and the Emphasis is on Some Dog Owners Here, Not all.) That Train their Pitbull Dogs,(or any other breed come to that.) to Dog fight to the death, also pump them full of steriods just to be Macho. Thats why here in the U.K. we have the Dangerous Dog act to protect People and kids. So who is the smarter now, so Enough with the Insults Please. Thank you.

Cats aren't dumb. What do you mean they need to make a cat-dog? Cats can be interesting. And they do like to walk around and play during the night. My cat is fat and my other cat is sorta fat and they actually play with me sometimes! My dog is actually dumb, but I still love her. She hits her head on everything. My other dog is still smart though!

I'll bet my cat is smarter than your dog...actually probably smarter than you....I see cats all the time that do tricks and play and even listen when you talk to it. Everyone has a right to ask questions but yours is one of ignorance.

Either you have never had a cat or you don't know what to do with one.

Actually dogs and cats tend to spend about the same time relaxing, it really depends on the breed.

If you're attentive to anything, it will attend to you.

I'm not a huge cat fan, I think they are snobs. I love coming home from work and having my dog run and see me excited that I'm home. Maybe I'm not secure enough and I need that blind affection from my pooch. Coming home and hoping that my cat will want to see me isn't my thing. Cats are way to independent, and you're right. The only trick they know really isn't a trick. You can run a laser light over the carpet and they'll follow it around. Guess what, my dog does that, plus other tricks. People that own cats are the same people that worship Starbucks and probably drive volkswagons.
