What's the name of the effect when the top corners of a photo are darker than the rest of the photo?

Sounds as though you are getting vignetting. Usually it appears in all 4 corners. Were you trying to shade the lens somehow?

Vignetting, or just darkened corners. Here is one way to acheive that result in Photoshop:
