The pop-up says "your system does not support blah, blah". This is an expensive, current lap top! Help me please.

The file should be ".wmv" which is a proper file extension, v-ms-wmv is not, try to check the file name to see if it has the proper extention, right click on it select, properties, find the name in the popup, post the name with extension. Try VLC media player which can play a broad range of media.

Did your friend attach an actual WMV file to an email? Or did your friend send you the URL of a video file?
If your friend sent you the actual WMV file, perhaps it got mangled en route.

Maybe you don't have the appropriate program/software to open that file.
