How do you know they are not on the way to a job. Just because they don't have their lights on doesn't mean they aren't trying to get to a call quickly.

One of my beliefs is that unless you know what you are talking about, you should keep your mouth shut! To answer your question, a police officer may break the speed limit for a number of reasons. For starters, if the officer observes a driver disobeying the posted speed limit, the officer obviously has to catch up to that driver, because if the officer were to maintain the speed limit, he/she would never catch that driver! Another reason why an officer may break the speed limit is because of the nature of the situation that they are responding to. Some police departments require that the officer must obtain authorization to use their lights/siren when responding to a call, so if the officer is dispatched to a call that may be urgent but hasn't been authorized the use of the lights/siren, then the officer will get there as fast as he/she can in a safe manner.
Allow me to ask you a question, smarty pants. If someone is breaking into your house, would you want me to respond quickly and catch the bad guy, or would you like the bad guy to hear my siren coming from miles away and have enough time to make a getaway??? Before you go and badger the fact that an officer may break the speed limit, you may want to educate yourself first, just some food for thought.
Oh, and by the way.....if you happen to see a police car that has its lights and siren in use.....note that when an officer is responding with lights/siren in use, they are allowed to disregard ALL (notice i said "ALL") traffic laws and regulations!!! Some departments may have some regulations on the use of lights/siren, but for the most part, when lights/siren are in use, the officer may disregard ALL traffic laws and regulations.

In the course of duty police officers are allowed to break minor traffic laws.
PS not every call warrants lights and sirens and are still time sensitive.
PPS. People panic when they hear the sirens and see the lights, sometimes it makes it more dangerous to have them on, then to just speed and weave through the traffic.
PPPS. REMEMBER, always pull to the right, we are usually required to pass on the left. Thanks.
Heath, Don't be surprised one day if an officer pulls to the side of the road and pulls you over and tickets you. It is fairly easy to have a call reassigned and get people who think it is OK to keep pace with the police.

I find that most officers on the highways are moving with the faster traffic. They usually have an overly large area to patrol, and must cover it in a quicker manner, then you'd expect. Secondly they may be traveling to a crime scene, but do not wish to advertise their presence, to anyone who is perpetrating a crime.

You have no clue if we are on a call or not. Lights and sirens are not always needed, its called code 2. Stop talking and assuming about something you obviously have no idea about.

They break the law because no common man dare to ask them. Morever they are authorised to protect the law and they are under impression that no one would ask them if they break the law, hence they dare to do so. Individual person hesitate to question them, they are not united, further they offraid as why to invite unwanted problem for them?
