Detectives have a number of ways to get a suspect to admit to committing a crime through interrogation. If what you say is true, and that you are being accused of committing a crime when you are actually innocent, then invoke your rights. If you waive your rights, (usually requires your signature on a rights waiver form) then the detective can fire away. On the other hand, if you invoke your rights and refuse to answer any questions, then the detective can no longer ask you any kind of incriminating questions. When you hear the words "you have the right to remain silent, anything you say can be used against you in a court of law", it's true. You do not have to answer any questions and you can have an attorney present. If you really are innocent, then good luck to you. If you committed a crime and you know it, then justice will prevail, one way or another.

Can they ? It's one of their best things...in the example you cited, to paraphrase Frank Lloyd Wright..''it ain't bragging if you can do it.'' This action by the detective is the next logical step in his process : ascertain the validity of all available evidence, and, if warranted, forward his recommendations to the Prosecutor. The Prosecutor will then decide on convening a Grand Jury.

Refuse to talk to them without your attorney present. That is your legal right. If you didn't commit the crime, let them bring charges against you. If they don't have the evidence they will never get a conviction.

The police can do almost anything, except physical torture.
You should politely say your attorney will not allow you to answer any questions, and don't say anything without your attorney present.
