If there are rescue groups in your area, the dogs they have for adoption will show up on those sites as well. Some rescue groups foster all the dogs for adoption in the homes of the people who work/volunteer for them. There are groups for specific breeds as well as groups for all dog breeds.
Most shelters/rescue groups have adoption fees between $100 and $200.
You can also check the newspaper classifieds. Just don't go spend hundreds of dollars at the pet store as you will most likely pay all that money for a sick puppy.

Petfinder is a great place to go since you have internet, just type in the dog you want and your area, and voila` you have many many choices. The benefit of this is 1) you are saving a dogs life 2) they often come neutered and up to date on shots (depending on how old they are) 3) already Microchipped (in case the little guy ever gets lost) and finally 4) the dogs on petfinder are in local shelter's and foster homes, so you usually have to pay no more then 200 dollar adoption fee ( sometimes 100 depends where you are)
So good luck, and love that little guy

Have you tried a doxie rescue organization yet? Many of them have older doxies who need a loving home (not old as in "old" but age 4+, so they will be less boisterous and more happy to just keep your dad company, rather than wanting to play all the time). Their adoption fees are usually fairly small, and oftentimes they are already house trained.
If he would like another doxie, it might be an option to think about. You can also ask here: http://hotdogblog.com/ and see if anyone is looking to re-home an adult doxie. The members will even try to set up transportation from the doxie's home to your dad's place if you ask for help with that.
I have two dachshunds myself. It's a wonderful breed. Whatever you decide, I hope your dad will be able to find a new friend very soon.

If you know some breeds you like - perhaps a chihuaha or even a dachshund, check into rescue organizations for the breed. You can also use www.petfinder.com to search any location for the animal you want and I just saw several lovely dachshunds on there for my own location.
Good luck!
This is how we found our lovely lab mix Velvet. She was a rescue and only cost us $50 which covered the cost of her being spayed.

I would say to get a Shih Tzu (some people call them sh*t tsu) they are not very big dogs, they need to be groomed (but they don't shed a lot) and they are couch potatoes. They love to be around you and cuddle and give kisses. Most of the time they love to curl up on your lap. Check out www.petfinder.com and see if there are any in your area that can be adopted. Good luck and I hope you find the right dog for your dad!

I'm sure there is more than 1 pound in your area. Check the phone book. You might even be able to find purebreds. Keep checking and they should also be able to put you on a calling list of sorts. Let them know the size specifications, and they'll call once one comes in. Good luck, and sorry about your father's loss.

Go to the local pound or humane society. Dogs are typically under $100 at those types of places.
You can also check local rescues. Dogs will be more expensive from a rescue but they have typically been vetted already.
Good luck! Sorry about your dad's loss!
Oh... and as far as a certain breed-- you might consider toy poodles, maltese, yorkies. Those dogs are small and don't shed.

Try a Toy Fox Terrier. UKC reg. pups usually run $100-150. They weigh about 7-8 lbs. full grown. they don't shed much at all. They are very loyal, affectionate, healthy, and easy to train.

Just check out these Dachshunds that are up for adoption on this list, look for your state to see if any are in other towns near you.

Toy Poodles are good dogs. We have one and we got it very cheap, $200, and it doesn't shed, and she doesn't eat much, so she is cheap and a bundle of fun, and a great lap dog. She weighs about 3-5 lbs. But if that is over your limit....just go to the pound. Rescue one!
