Just because you are allergic to shrimp, it does not mean that you will be allergic to sushi. Sushi is made from other types of seafood besides shrimp. Are you allergic to shellfish in general, or just shrimp. Many are allergic to the catagory as a whole, but there are some like my dad, he was allergic to shrimp because of the iodine used in the soaking process but he could eat crab and oysters. Also, I think you would need to think of what type allergy you have before trying any type of sushi. Even if you order it with fish that is not of the shellfish variety, it still can be cross-contaminated by shrimp and other shellfish you may be allergic to. If the reaction could be fatal, I do think I would take no chances on sushi unless it was some that you either made yourself or where you know that the knives used were cleaned thouroughly. You can learn to make great sushi with vegetables or with things you are not allergic at home. It is fun and easy when you get the hang of it. You would definately be safe then to enjoy, be guaranteed the freshness of your dish, and impress the hell out of your friends!! Good luck to you!!

No, it only means you are allergic to shrimp, or, anything that is prepared with shrimp. I am allergic to fish - but not shrimp. Go figure. I cannot eat clam chowder (and I love it) nor have a single bite of any kind of fish. Be careful on what you eat, and make sure you know the ingredients. Ask the wait staff, and if they don't know, insist that they ask the chef. The worst press a restaurant can get is when a diner is hospitalized over something like this. Also - contact your doctor and get an Epi-pen, which is a shot you can give yourself if you ever ingest something by mistake. Lastly - carry Benadryl in your car, and take two if you ever begin to have any kind of allergic reaction to something you ate. If it gets worse, go to the ER and they will get you fixed up right quick! Good luck!

Sushi is any seafood that is served on a little ball of rice. If you are allergic to shrimp, you probably are allergic to most shellfish. This would include lobster, crab, crawfish, langostino, clam, etc. You may or may not be allergic to fin-fish, such as tuna, trout, salmon, etc. If you are not allergic to fin-fish, you can safely eat tuna or salmon sushi that is prepared at home. Do not eat sushi at restaurants, due to the risk of cross-contamination. Also, when eating in asian or chinese restaurants, be sure to ask if any of the dishes are prepared with oyster sauce as it is a common flavoring. In latin restaurants, make sure they don't use dried shrimp in flavoring any of the sauces. It is a common ingredient in south and central american foods.

Chefs that prepare sushi tend to work in a area that could be contaminated with shrimp ...since shellfish are a common ingredient in other Japanese foods....Some allergies are life-threatening...not something to take chances with.
You have to be very careful when eating out. I would have a heart to heart talk with who is preparing the sushi to know first hand...you can't trust the information from day to day....always possible someone else new is preping the food and would have different routines/habits that could affect you. Assume nothing!
Better safe than sorry! That is my BEST ANSWER!

some sushi like the eel roll only has eel. A lot of sushi doesn't have shrimp so, you would just stay away from the shrimp and you will be fine.

Maybe. The reason you are allergic to shrimp is because it has a lot of iodine in it, which is what causes your reaction. Probably, crab, lobster, and other sea food will make you sick as well. By the way, always mention this allergy to doctors and dentists since iodine is in a lot of medical proceedures and you don't want to have a bad reaction.

No it doesn't. Shrimp are crustaceans. Sushi is raw fish. Two totally different things. You MIGHT be allergic to shellfish, i.e. clams, mussels, oysters.

Be careful of any shell fish that is the honest answer. yes it can affect other things just like potatoes and tomato's are of the same family and so is banana and latex. It is hard but easier to just give up eating anything that disagrees with you. I have many allergies and it si so easy these days to get them, not just from the food but from the pesticides etc they put in our food. G
