Fill out a new 1040 (or 1040A) with all of your information including claiming your daughter. Then lay it side by side with the return you originally filed. You'll then enter the "new" and "original" numbers for any lines that are different, and show the differences in column C. When it asks for an explanation of what changed, say that you are adding a claim for your daughter as a dependent.

I'm looking at the form online. You need to fill in the back since you are changing your number of exemptions. Then put the amount from line 32 (on the back) in line 4 on the front. Be sure that you can claim her before you file an amended return because this could be a red flag to the IRS and they might question it.

It is a confusing form. I suggest you get a blank 2006 1040 form (at irs.gov), and fill it out with that dependent added. It will then be easier to compare it with the original 1040, and copy the numbers to the 1040X. (I never could understand why they don't just tell you to send in a corrected 1040, instead of making you force these numbers onto a 1040X)

You put what was on the original return in Column A.
You put the corrected amount in Column C
You put the difference between the two in Column B.
Follow the instructions for the rest of the form slowly. Do a rough draft in pencil first.

You will be entitled to the $1,000 child credit for your daughter and maybe additional child credit and earned income credit.
