sig as directed means that the patient is to take the medicine according to the directions given to them by the physician. the physician didn't bother to write the directions on the prescription pad, and is trusting that you listened to her when she told you what to do with it.
sig is an old latin abbreviation used to start out the instructions line on the prescription. Examples of clearer instructions include "sig: 1 tablet twice per day with food" or "sig: apply to rash every 4 hours or as needed for itching"
"as directed" is the lazy physician's way of saying "I already told the patient what to do with it, so I'm not writing it down"
by the way DAW is the abbreviation used for brand-name only. It means "dispense as written"
