1 Corinthians 14 1:5
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. or anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I wold rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be edified.

Acts Chapter 2 as well as 1 Corinthians Chapter 12 & 14.
Acts is referring more towards the first baptism of the Holy Spirit and the evidence was speaking in other tongues.
1 Corinthians 12 is talking more about the gifts of the spirit and 14 explains tongues a little more.
It was not just for the 1st century church. It is still used today and has a very useful function as you will find in your readings above. Not only does it allow you to talk directly to God in his heavenly language, but it edifies your spirit and boosts you up. Read about it and you will discover all it is used for.

I Corinthians 14:1-33 Paul is speaking on the gift of speaking in tongues and how it is to be used by believers. There is always to be an interpreter to give meaning to others, it is only to be done around other believers, if an interpreter is not available then you are to keep silent. He also warns of the use of speaking in tongues and how it can hinder non-believers.

Here are a few Scriptures on speaking in tongues. God bless you.
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2:8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?
Acts 2:11 Cretans and Arabs – we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God
1 Corinthians 14:2 For he who speak in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understand him; however in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
1 Corinthians 14:4 He who speaks in tongues edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
1 Corinthians 14:5,6 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification. But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?
1 Corinthians 14:18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all
1 Corinthians 14:39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.

take special note - tongues and knowledge will cease one day - anyone who tells you tongues have ceased is also really saying so has knowledge...

All I know is that it says your not supposed to talk in tongues. Like you have those tv evangelists that talk in tongues. Who in the world is benefiting from that? no one why talk to a congregation in a tongue that no one understands? How can you preach the Gospel in tongues that no one will hear? How will people be saved?

Acts chapter 2 comes to mind immediately........
Be careful with this though........I believe tongues were more for the 1st century church.....and that there is no more need for them in the body of Christ
