A girl in my daughter's 5th grade class has a shirt that reads on the front "Tell you boyfriend I said..."
then on the back it says "Thanks!"
I felt this was inappropriate for a 5th grader, and I mentioned it to another one of my adult friends. To make a long story short, it got back to the child who wore the shirt that I had commented on it, and she told her mother, who called and told me off! She said there is no hidden meaning in the shirt, it just means "tell you boyfriend I said thanks for looking at me cuz he thinks I'm pretty." I didn't agree. The school didn't agree either, apparently, because the child had to change her shirt or turn it inside out that day at school. What is your opinion of the meaning?

I'm with you.
The other mom had no right to call and chew you out over that. Regardless of what she or anyone else thinks, you're entitled to your opinion. That the school apparently agreed that it wasn't appropriate, and made her change, tells me that you weren't totally off.
That shirt was meant to be a kind of biting insult at nobody in particular. There's nothing biting or insulting about a heartfelt thanks because someone thinks you're pretty.
Whether that's what she felt it meant or not, I think most people would agree that it hints at something that is entirely inappropriate for a 5th grader.
I am amazed by the ignorance of any parent who would let their child wear that, but then, the mom kind of showed off her spectacular parenting skills by calling you and chewing you out for simply stating an opinion about what her child was wearing. How "high school" of her.

That is not cute, the mother might as well have bought a shirt that said "Sperm Dumpster" in glitter! Why something like that was even made in a size that could fit a 10 year old is beyond me! The fact that the mother even thought it was cute for her 10 year old to wear just says to me she will be on the pill by 11 and the mother will be okay with it! I am not an old fuddy duddy either, I am only 26 and I have a 6 year old and I would never think of wearing something like that, let alone put it on my child! By allowing her daughter to wear that she is saying to her child "boys are fun, and the only thing that matters is what a boy thinks of you" even if she did not express that verbally! That is okay when her 14 pops up with an STD or pregnant she can buy her 14 a shirt that says "Bun in the oven" that should be cute!

Yes I agree with you and the school, it is inappropriate for a 10 yr old. I personally think it is a way of broadcasting that you are going around stealing boyfriends and if that is the image that you want on your child's shirt well then I would be worried about you as a parent let alone a teenager wearing a shirt like that ya know?

You got the interpretation right... and so did the school, apparently. Given the character of any mother who would buy her 10 year old child this shirt and let her wear it to school, I'm not surprised that she was enough of an idiot to take offense to your comment. She probably just enjoyed the scene that the whole incident made. I would forget that it ever happened and just explain to your child that it was inappropriate. The more of a deal it becomes, the happier this other woman will probably be.

I totally agree with you and would have been upset if I saw a child wearing that in my sons school.
Definitely not appropriate whether the parent agrees or not. The parent probably just wants to believe her 5th grader is naive. Chances are the kid knows exactly what it means and it's highly inappropriate.
I'm glad to hear the school took action on it.

Sounds a little provocative to me. I would never let my 5th grader wear something inappropriate as that. You did the right thing by letting the school know about the situation.

I would have said inappropriate. Most people would presume it meant something a bit more........physical. Not good for a child in 5th grade. If I'd been teaching her I would have done the same as the school.

I am A student myself. And I also think thats innappropriate. Her mother shouldn't have handled the situatuation like that. She was very immature. But yea. It does have a hidden meaning. I does mean, she stole the other girls boyfriend and they either did some stuff or he cheated on her. Which is way too innapropriate for Grade school!!!

Yeah, the shirt is inappropriate, but don't be too surprised that her mother told you off. She thinks that shirt is appropriate for her daughter, so that shows what kind of judgement she has.

you are right a 5th grader has absolutely no reason to wear a shirt like that, and her mother obviously needs help if she lets her daughter go around like that now, I shutter to imagine the outfits in high school.
