They don't really serve us or clean up after us. They just take our money and put something in a bag. By that standard we should tip people at 7-11 for ringing us up and putting our things in a bag. It's almost insulting that people want tips for everything these days.

I'm with ya there. You're right, but you can't blame them for trying. I'm sure a few people fall for it.

I am usually quite the proponent for tipping, being in the service industry myself, but I have to draw the line here. There is no reason to tip at Dunkin Donuts or other establishments like that. Tipping is for more than just grabbing pre-made food and stuffing it in a bag.

I agree. Tipping is for people who make less than minimum wage on the assumption they will get tipped. This means wait staff only! I think even that needs to change: wait staff should be paid a regular wage, and tipping should be completely optional. I have had my credit card receipt changed by a waitress so she'd get a higher tip.

I have given a tip to a fast food place, when they gave me a ton of extra food because it was closing time.

I didn't know that. I totally agree with you. It's not like a waiter/waitress who actually serves you. I would give them what I call the deer-in-the-headlights look...you know, the one where you look at people like they have a third eye?? lol Anyhow, I don't tip fast food people, especially not someone who's just throwing some cake donuts into a bag and then taking your money.

I see no reason for a tip. And not all fast food jobs are minimum wage. I work in customer service. I do not expect a tip just because I helped a person with a problem or gave them service that no one else would help them with. If that was the case the whole wprld would be a big tip jar.

I agree. I was recently in line at a drive-through Starbucks and they had a tip cup on the outside ledge, near the window. Later in the day a coworker went back and said the tip cup had been moved closer to the customer. Sorry, but at $5 a drink, you're not getting a tip!

When tipping first became popular a costumer would tip BEFORE they were served. It was the way to ensure great service. It later evolved into customers tipping for great service that they had just received. Sort of a thanks for the courtesy. It is nice to tip for good service if someone has gone out of there way to make you feel welcome or to take care of your needs. Also those clerks make only minimum wage, and tips are often greatly appreciated. If you do not think that great service has accrued, then dont tip. It is your option, not a demand.

I think that they expect tips because people would tell them to keep the change when they bought coffee & the change was only a few cents. They just started putting out tip cups so that they could split them with up among the employees. In a way it is "our" fault that they expect them. Sometimes I put my change in the cup, sometimes I don't.Depends on the service.

it depends. I used to work at a coffee shop like this, and some of the regulars used to tip us, because we knew their order by heart. Others used to tip us when they'd have a really large order, and when we helped them take it to their car. It just depends on the service. If they're really nice, give them a small tip, if not, then don't give them anything.

I agree with you there. But if you are sitting at the counter and they are getting you a drink and cleaning up after you, then a tip is in order.
