While the merits of bull-fighting are indeed questionable, let's not lose sight of the fact that the bull is still just an animal. The life of the matador is significantly more important than the bull.
That's not to say slaughtering bulls is morally permissible. All I am saying is that the Church does not equate the value of the lives of animals with the value of the lives of people.
I personally do not approve of bull-fighting because I think it is needlessly cruel to the animal. However, having said that, I don't object to the matador's praying prior to a bull fight. Again, let's be real. If you were going to step into an arena with a bull, wouldn't you petition a saint and/or ask God for protection?

You can't expect all Catholics to be perfect. It's sick but lots of Christians do sick things. Just because they prayed to a saint before hand doesn't mean that that saint approved of it.

Because most Spaniards are Catholic to some degree. If the church came out against bullfighting they'd lose a lot of support and money.

The Pope can only give moral directions to Catholics when it comes to secular events like this and it is hoped that people will take notice, however in practice this rarely happens and a bullfighter making a lucrative living will not simply give this up no matter who tells him it is wrong.

Because the church knows that Bullfighting is entertaining and it will piss off a lot of Catholics if they 'ban' it.

christians have little regard for life other that human.
everything else is beast of burden.
the ones that do have compassion for the rest of the animal kingdom, is one of the liberties they take from 'interpreting' the bible
