Well you could get Rome Total War at the bargain bin. If you liked that you could go and spend more money on Medieval Total War( I agree a great game ). Have you ever heard of the Civilization series? Or 1701 A.D. Go to the PC Gamer website and read some reviews. Added Later: Medieval Total War 2 came out about 10 months ago. there is also an earlier version.

The Total War Series may be something that you'd like to look into. They run as follows:
Total War Shogun (Fuedal Japan)
Medieval Total War and its expansion pack Viking Invasion
Rone Total War and its expansion pack Barbarian Invasion
Medieval Total War 2
As these games progress you fight real battles in real time. Unlike AOE having 5000 troops versus a force of 1500 doesn't assure you a win as it depends upon how well equipted your adversary is. In addition, religion plays a major role in the game. Its somewhat like AOE except it's brought to a much more complicated and higher level. Its strategy at its best coupled with marriages into other families, religion, politics, diplomacy and assassination.

Yea, I loved AOE 2 as well and if you liked that you would love Starcraft + Starcraft: Brood War. But if you have a high-end PC, you could wait for Starcraft 2.
