I am trying to bring my chronically ill parent out of the house for some fresh air (gardens, restaruants, mall), rather than couping him up 24/7 in the house. But my siblings are constantly telling me I have to be sensitive to the public as the sight of feeding tubes through his nose is disgusting. I want to bring my dad out, but, does the sight of a wheelchair bound patient with feeding tubes bother the bublic at all (say, you were in a restaurant)?

No, it wouldn't bother me at all. Perhaps instead of worrying about what everybody else thinks, how about asking your dad how he would feel going out in public? If the general population doesn't like what they see, they can always turn their collective heads the other way, but if your dad is uncomfortable, he can't. Sounds like the concern your siblings have for the "public" is more an expression of their own concerns and disgust rather than a genuine concern for the public.

If you want to take your dad out, and he's okay with it, more power to you both! Enjoy the time you have with each other and let the general public worry about themselves. You don't have to.

This is a context sensitive issue. Tubes in the nose or mouth would be troublesome to many in a food-related setting (restaraunt, grocery store, etc.) but not so much in other settings.

You want to be sensitive, but there is a heirarchy of people whose opinions you care about-
- You and your family. You will be looked at in several ways as well, and how do YOU feel about the sight of him?
- His. How is HE going to feel in this situation? Many people in his situation are very embarrassed by the whole thing. If he is being fed by tubes, does he really want to be surrounded by people enjoying eating?? (Do you like going to restaraunts when you cannot eat for whatever reason?)
- Your siblings. I rather suspect they are more embarrassed by the thought of him more than the reality, but you want them on your side.
- The general public. For the most part- who cares what they think? As long as it does not bother you or your father, the heck with them... to an extent.

By all means- gardens, picnics, malls, art museums, etc. but perhaps not restaraunts, crowded stores, etc.

I think people need to accept that people with chronic conditions or who are otherwise different also have a right to be in public. Should blind people be locked away? Should dwarves stay at home so as to not upset anybody? Let your father enjoy his time outside like anybody else!!! In the restaurant let them know in advance you have a person with special considerations coming, and they can get you a seat which is accessible but does not block traffic for the workers.

Bullshit! Who gives a damn what other people think? Take your dad out, it will do him the world of good. If people think its disgusting (which isn't NOT) that is THEIR problem not yours or your dads....

Your siblings are being very shallow. You obviously care about your dad, how he feels emotionally and want to give him a nice experience.

There should be NO stigma to being in a wheel chair. If it "bothers" the "public" then too bad! Don't listen to your siblings. Your dad will hugely benefit from going out. It will give his mental state a boost.

If it is offensive to some they don't have to look!!!! I don't think I would take the patient to a restaurant besides if they have a feeding tube it is probably because they can't eat.. so why carry them to one.

if people dont like it then they dont have to look over at your dad do they. it doesnt bother me at all, just ask ur dad if he wud feel comfortable. iknew ppl in wheelchairs who dnt want 2 be seen in them.
if people dont like it then they are the ones with the problem hun , not you, your not making them look, its their decision so they should look away if they dont like it
