There are three ways to get the access you require.

1) you need to set up a "Network" on your laptop. You will need the security key for accessing the router as without the key, it won't allow the laptop any access. You need to use the "Network SetUp Wizard" in your "Control Panel" and just follow the prompts.

2) you can create a "Network" between the PC and the laptop by using the "Network SetUp Wizard" and use the PC as a "Server". What this means is that rather than connecting directly with the Router, you will connect to the Router via the PC. This way you don't need the Security Key for accessing the Router as the PC already has it stored.

3) you need to check the Router settings, on the PC and get them to scan for your device (Wireless Card). Alternatively, you can get your laptop to scan for any "Wireless Connections Available". When you see the Router, click on "Connect To". You will then be prompted to enter the Security Key and once entered you will be on-line.

make sure your routers are ISR(integrated service routers) meaning their also a switch. The back should have 4 or 5 ports. ones for your modem. the others are for your computers. you can either connect your laptop with a straight through or cross-over. I forget which one it is, but i can only be one of them. make sure it is the right kind of cable. if your going wireless get an adapter. doesnt seem like you mentioned anything about an adapter assuming your going wireless. if you need any help you can Email me and ill try to help you.

Tell us what errors you get when trying to connect your moms machine, and is her machine using a cable or is it wireless? You can use any machine with a router, but you need the router and the computer configured correctly.

Dear before connecting with router , you need to check your IP addresses. Since you are not aware of this better you can call your service provider.
You can find IP address in Local area network under property section.

I don't think there's something wrong with your mom's desk top. Check connections and configurations. Linksys is plug and play, I have one. Contact your provider if you still have problems after your reconfigurations....

well it hard to answers your question really, you dont give enough detail, if you can connect to the internet or someone can in you family then you dont need to ring them. firstly has your moms computer got a wireless adapter secondly have you type in the WEP address or if so the MAC address. i will keep this post open so just add extra detail and tell me what youve done

Do you have dial up service? If yes, simply connect to your Mom's dial up and use that service. It may be slow but you will be connected. It is old school.

try this first.

determine your moms internet connection, goto properties --> goto 'advanced' tab --> checklist "allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" --> klik OK.
