Francois Marie Arouet (pen name Voltaire), was one of the greatest thinkers and satirist of the 18th Century. His most famous work is Candide, but he wrote a great deal of social commentary and philosophy. His ideas helped lead to the French Revolution.

"Judge a man ,not by his answers but by his questions." What this means to me is that you should judge someone not by their learning but rather by the matters with wich they are concerned.

That is, someone with a great deal of knowledge may not be as admiralble as someone who seek justice or wisdom.

François-Marie Arouet (21 November 1694 – 30 May 1778), better known by the pen name Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment writer, essayist, deist and philosopher known for his wit, philosophical sport, and defense of civil liberties, including freedom of religion and the right to a fair trial. He was an outspoken supporter of social reform despite strict censorship and harsh penalties for those who broke them. A satirical polemicist, he frequently made use of his works to criticize Christian Church dogma and the French institutions of his day.

You've received good answers but here's two other facts about Voltaire that are just interesting as all heck and should never be left out of a 'Who is Voltaire?' question.. :)

He is known to have drank up to 200 cups of coffee in a single day.

His coffin was dug up and his body found to be missing. Well... actually, it wasn't found .. but you know what I meant. :)
