There is very overwhelming information on the internet and I would like to know of legitimate sites that will not charge me to learn this information. I'm looking to get into website design to start a new career at home. Since being a part of "reduction of force" I'm left to figure out something new. With 3 small children I would like to continue to stay home and make a living. Any information anyone can provide that would help me understand a world that seems so complicated would be deeply appreciated. I know I can learn it I'm just overwhelmed with the lingo. Thank you for you help.

I'm kind of in the same boat you are. I want to build a site for myself, but I don't know really how to build a site besides doing a little something on this program called Frontpage. I don't have tons of money to spend on a web designer so I'm going to teach myself using books and trial and error. I taught myself how to use Photoshop and now I'm a pretty good retoucher... I think you should do the same- pick up some "how to/dummy" books OR try to save up for a web designer! Good luck :)

If you want to do website design as a career, then you need to learn properly, otherwise your designs will appear amateurish which will never do in the world of commerce. I suggest therefore you investigate what courses are being held at your local colleges, community centres etc. Unless you become very proficient, very professional you will get nowhere. Designing webpages has become so easy over the years, anybody can do it, but you have to be above the rest to get business.

I was actually surfing for the same type of networking site last week. The only thing I came across was a site that of course charged a monthly fee. I can't remember what it was called. Basically you just post your interests and resume on it... If you find anything let me know. It would be great to have a place to brainstorm and meet like minded individuals looking to develop business opportunities.

the number one best place to start is

www.w3schools.com.

these guys offer free html training as well as other web based languages like php and javascript.

in the software department try downloading a trial version of adobe dreamweaver to wet your appetite for webdesign.
