I am in Arizona for school and it is driving me nuts not to be there watching my kids grow. So any ideas how to do this as cheaply and safely as possible would be appreciated.

Buy a used trailer and load it up. Sell it when you get there. That should do it.

Hey, the Uhaul idea sounds good but the company nickles and dimes you to death and has a huge fee for moving the vehicle to another location.
Moving companys do good work but if you get the wrong one it can cost a fortune and its pricey even with a good company.
I just finished a major move. Now I am single so it's not quite the same. But...
I went through my things and realized that most of the stuff I owned, I hadn't even looked at in years. What was salvagable I sold in a garage sale,$$$, and the concept was to get rid of it!! If someone wanted it I made a price that they couldn't refuse. The rest of my stuff went in the round file or to Good Will. I kept some of my clothes,(clothes that I hadn't worn in years and never would again, were a large part of the trash) my family pictures, my computer, my tools and some art. All the electronics and dishes and sheets, the mundane junk that we somehow end up with was sold or trashed. Almost everyting can be replaced.
I have found that Auction houses sell most of what I need for 10 cents on the dollar. Washers and dryers, TV's, Ovens, furniture. So it can be replaced at a pittance and its fun getting new stuff.
When all is said and done you just don't need 95% of the junk life throws at you. I don't know why that stuff sticks but when you peel it off and trash it, its a wonderful feeling. I kept saying to myself, "if I throw it away, I will need it next week" That just didn't happen.
Clear out your crap. That's the way to move cheap!
