For some reason I just can't get it. I keep waiting for that ah ha moment that hasn't came yet. I can't help my daughter at all with it.

It seems to me that you might be plunging in part-way along, without having gone through all the basic principles first, and learnt the conventions; I can understand that some of it might then seem confusing.

If your daughter is also confused, it may be that you are picking up some of her confusion, and she may have misled you by passing on some of her own misunderstandings.

It is a fact that some people find it easy to grasp, and others struggle to master the basic principles, but there really is no special trick to facilitate learning. It is a matter of learning the basic principles and how to apply them -- and then practising !

That said, once learnt, it really is a logical and straightforward system which I think is within the capability of anyone of reasonable intelligence to become fairly proficient in. And it really does have practical, everyday uses, as browsing through some of the questions in this forum demonstrates.

If you could be more specific about which bits you find specially confusing, it may be easier to sort out where you are going wrong, which may be more what you need than a general elementary course in algebra.

If you care to e-mail me with some specific examples, I will do what I can to (hopefully) enlighten you !

Work a s.h.i.t.l.o.a.d. of problems. And especially go over the 'example' problems step by step with the book and make sure that, at each step, you understand exactly what was done and, even more importantly, -why- it was done.

Or drop a line to me if you want.

Well, in algebra...I have a single motto:-

"Get Known to The Unknown"..

(That is be familiar with x,y,z,unknowns, and just see the magic)
