My first thought is that it seems kind of presumptuous and arrogant. I don't mean to say that there is no truth to it at all, but I get so tired of people who presume that somehow they are the 'strong' ones and that others are weak.

"Religions are merely refuges for the weak and disoriented who are in constant need and dependence of guidance.”

False!

What makes that statement false is the, "merely refuges for the weak and disoriented",

BUT WHAT IS TRUE IS EVERYONE IS,
"in constant need and dependence of guidance.”,

ALWAYS!

God Bless You!

I find a contradiction in this quote.
IF religions "could" be refuges then they would be shelters for protection, and sanctuaries which secures safety by their sacredness.
The weak and disoriented you are referring to ~~ more often than not ~~ come out weaker, and more disoriented, with even greater need of guidance.
In my opinion, the word religions and refuges, should never be used in the same sentence.

That's just like calling ALL dogs brown. I would say that most people on this earth are weak and disoriented now days. Some people just put on a "better front" and are the the weaker ones cuz they don't have the courage to admit it whereas the stronger ones will take the time and find a healthy place to start healing. I think it's healthier to turn to religion rather than drugs, alcohol, unhealthy relationships, whatever.

Nice question, pushed a few buttons here! I agree to an extent with your quote..

Religions do provide a place of refuge for those weakened and disoriented BY a materialistic and shallow world.

All people, atheists and religious enthusiasts, who put their utter most faith in a world of externalities, will find themselves weakened, and will eventually turn to prayer during their desperate times, be it at a loved ones deathbed, school examination times, or even, lol, performance appraisals at the work place!

All those who gain faith in themselves, and draw strength from within, whether it means finding god in their heart, or discovering a greater purpose upon introspection, do not need to CONSTANTLY rely on religion for strength, examples, ironically include, Jesus Christ and on the other end of the spectrum, Saddam Hussein. No one can deny these people certainly drew their strength from within.

I also believe that there are those who have a constant need or dependence for religion, they are so because they wrongly putting half their faith in religion to gain strength, and the other half of their faith in a superficial world to gain strength. While the worlds are not mutually exclusive, the belief systems very much are, and this will surely weaken the human spirit. We must pity these "refugees"!

The only way I can see someone not being weakened, is to interact with a materialistic world on a superficial level. ie Don't invest your faith in it, by depending on it for strength, depend on yourself.

That may be true in some, or in many, cases. Billy Graham as only one example is neither weak nor disoriented, though I disagree with him. However, in syllogistic (propositional) logic, religion almost always follows one of the 60 forms that lead to false (propositionally illogical)conclusions.

I do not agree with the quote. In fact an individual becomes more stronger with belief in religion and God.
Knowledge and capabilities of a human being, however great he may be, are limited and he has to have God's blessings to be successful in all his endeavours.

if you cant find power within yourself then god is someone to go to
whos to say what fills us is the right way
drawing out religion is good if its only true
but dont we all pull from something?
like parents, friends or philosophy
religion is just the same
its up to you to choose carefully what to listen to and most important drawing in your own thoughts in other thoughts because thats the true base of thinking

I believe that the quote is 100% true. If you really think about it, religion gives people something to believe in when they have nothing else in their life to believe in. Usually these people believe that they cannot make it on their own, so they resort to some higher being that they believe will help them. Hence, you see so many people in prison become born again Christhians. They have nothing or no one else to turn to so they turn to religion.
