Never. It depend on when it is "midnight" where you are. A while back, I was at sea in the Navy in submarines. We lived an 18 hour day, 3 shifts of 6 hours. 6 hours was determined to be the longest "day" a man could endure and be 100% effective at doing the job. More than 18 hours meant people suffered from fatigue which detracted from performance. So, getting off watch on an 18 hour cycle meant breakfast one day, midrats (midnight snack style meal) the next, evening meal the next and finally lunch on the last day of the cycle. It is always daytime in the engineroom so the only way to tell what time it was up topside was by what meal was being served when you got off watch. I travel, drive, from place to place for months at a time. I always frequent truck stops since they serve breakfast 24 hours a day. No matter what time the clock says, breakfast is ALWAYS available. In that regard, a midnight snack is ALWAYS appropriate in the same manner as breakfast!

It's only too late for a midnight snack when it's 9 a.m. Then it'd be breakfast.
