Slap yourself in the face and then ask yourself if that was circumstance.
No, really.

"The Boss" known as Bruce Springsteen was rejected by several record companies before one gave him a chance, but then again, he helped himself by putting himself and his music out there - he probably played more cheap bars and lame county fairs before hitting it big ten years or so after he started. That's not circumstance, that's hard work.
Sting left the Police in the late 80's to go solo and play jazz, of all things. The pop music world thought he was nuts, until he put out the absolutely incredible album "Dream of the Blue Turtles" which launched his second career and established him as an accomplished songwriter. Not circumstance, again, hard work and persistence.
There is circumstance that changes people's lives in an instant - like the tsunami of a couple years ago or the victims of earthquakes, but there is just as much evidence of people changing their own lives by rejecting the assumed status quo and firmly walking their own path despite rejection, pain, sorrow, and misfortune along the way. I applaud those who stick to their guns and stand up for right and defy the odds and happenstances, by refusing to be victims and accepting whatever crap gets thrown at them, they have learned or know how to duck and get out of the way and keep on.
Guess it's time to duck and get out of the way of incoming.......

After you leave school your learning does not stop. Many of the things that happen or circumstances are beyond your control or planning. Everything that happens to you or around you shapes your life and your outlook on life. So you are a product of those circumstances. How you handle those circumstances is what determines what kind of a person you become.

In some respects yes. We don't have control over who our families are for example. In most respects though we become exactly what we set out to become. Here's an old saying that is mostly true. "failure to plan is planning to fail." If you plan an implement the plan you are likely to accomplish exactly what you plan to do. If you fail to do so you will be a victim of circumstance and although that doesn't make you a failure, it is giving up control of your life. So in a nutshell we are only a product of circumstance if we choose to be.
