I've been playing for 2 years (first 8 or so months by myself then with a teacher with whom I learned classical guitar). I consider myself an average guitarist at the moment. I noticed that I learned much faster with a teacher than without(I don't think it matters whether it's classical or not, your skills still go up; I'm still happy I asked my teacher to show me some exercises for electric although we still do classical guitar).

Probably several years at least. The only reason it didn't take longer? At the time, it seemed everyone was playing and all you had to do was to walk down the street to find somebody to jam with. You would spot someone or several people out on their porch or front steps just playing acoustics, or whatever. It was there that you learned new tricks and traded riffs. A real benefit for advancement and confidence. And here I am, forty-two years later, still looking for those jams. It is still the best way to hone your licks and improve on what you know.

Well it depends on your defination of average. I could play sweet child of mine after 6 months, but I practised for at least 3 hours a day.
In a band after a year, playing eighties covers like Van Halen, Bon Jovi etc.
by time I was eighteen (2 years into my playing) I learnt how to read and write music.
I have been playing 7 years now, and can preety much pick any song up, I play mostly steve vai and marty friedman and the like.
But it really depends on the amount of practise involved. half hour a day and it will take a long time. 3-6 hours a day, it will come easier.

For me, it was about 20 years. I started playing when I was 15, got disgusted at my lack of progress and didn't pick it up again for 6 or 8 years. I'm glad I got back to it though.
I never took a lesson so I guess I shouldn't be surprised it took so long to get average.

Me personally a few months, but that was locking myself up in my room when i was 13 day in and out w/ a big stack of tabs off the internet w/ everything from clapton to smashing pumkins to muddy waters (classic rock and blues is the way to go to up your skill quickly, blackbird- the beatles, red house - hendrix, before you accuse me - clapton, etc) . . . If you play til you bleed a few months oughta be ample time to get your basic scales and chords down, after you learn that its just getting your hands to stretch and move fast enough.
