I choose poetry, just like I choose a painting.
It's how I feel inside.
I choose it for a feel good, breath taking moment.
I don't care how famous the writer is or how famous the artist is, I simply choose what I like.
Thanks for the question.

Poetry really is in the eye, and heart, of the poet. As I am not one (I'm an expository writer), I'm probably not that good a judge. However, if you read enough, and write enough, poetry you'll know what's right and true for you.
In my opinion, The Bard and Edgar Allen Poe were some outstanding examples.

Yup, that is poetry. Poetry is an expression of thoughts, and it really doesn't matter how you represent it as long as you represent your thoughts. I like how you did this though. Breaking up complete thoughts over different lines works well for this piece, as does the emotion. I can feel what you are trying tto get across, and the way it is worded works well. Also, the repetition of the words "out in the dark, thinking of you" really add to the piece.

There is a poem by Marianne Moore called "Poetry" that hits it, for me.
Shakespeare yes -- within his plays as well as the sonnets and longer poems
TS Eliot -- mmmmm, that man grasped the essence of the modern trial, the desolation, the emptiness
These geniuses bring a sigh of humility and gratitude to me

poetry tells you something you didn't already know.
sometimes this can be as simple as taking you somewhere you have never been before; sometimes as complex as changing the person you are.
the best poetry tells you something you didn't already know, but need to. (better still if it is a truth you were trying hard to ignore).
