Fifty years ago, we had an egghead generation and people were genuinely interested in higher education for their children at all ages. There were intelligent discussions and presentations of super intelligence on Television - serious intelligent discussion groups - Where people of higher intelligence and knowledge actually offerred a course of action to resolve serious problems.
Then came the filthy programs nudity & crime shown in excess. At all hours of the day and night. Sexual acts on TV.
Due to removal of censorship in Movies and TV entertainment we have practically lost our sense of dignity & morals, no respect for the law and policemen.Less respect for the government and lying politicians. Girls wear floosie garments with no shame at all - some dress like cheap floosies.
With higher education at an all time high we succumb to the moral ambiguity that engulfs us all.
Fifty years of slow creeping degradation has taken its toll,
I am ashamed of the things people do in our modern era.
Even the "profets of doom" are demoralizeing their church members and our country is more and more allowing "Homosexuality" - they practice immoral un natural sex, that used to be illegal. They are not a race - so; they have no right to claim discrimination. Some of the old years were better than our present days.

We have regressed and progressed in many different aspects. We have become more accepting of some types of people, though now we are going through the same issues as 50 years ago with other groups of people. We have really come a long way with medical advances. You can look at several different ways. Should we (ethically speaking) intervene in every aspect of a person's health. Should we do stem cell research or not? Should we allow abortions or not? It's purely a personal decison either way. We have so many new things to help us out throughout our lives, but it seems as it is worse for the environment. Example: plastic diapers make it easier for parents, but put a huge strain on the environment. We have SUV's that make it easier for families to get around to and from..., but they pollute our eath terribly. It's really up in the air whether all in all and everything considered. Do the pros overthrow the cons?

I am 59 and when I was small, at Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) my dad's party piece was a song about Jemima Ross and the Beef Can Close. I have no idea who sang it originally, but it is an old Scottish song set around the Overgate in Dundee - I think there was an actual Beef Can Close (not a reputable area) ha ha. Anyway, I have recently been trying to find the lyrics to this song. My older cousin has remembered a couple of verses and I know the chorus, but I'm still missing a verse. I've tried Google, but nothing comes up - too old and too Scottish, as the words are in the Scottish dialect.

I have been in this life for those past 50 years. Technological progress...yes, definitely. Social progress...yes and no. Moral progress...absolutely not. 50 years ago, we didn't even have a key to the doors of our house. We could park our car downtown, leave the windows down and the keys in the ignition and the car, and everything in it, would still be there. As an 11-yr. old, I could walk anywhere in town at night and be perfectly safe. School shootings were inconceivable. We had no bars on our windows or fences between our houses. Neighbors would help each other. Now they fence out each other. Has society progressed or regressed in the past 50 years? You do the math.

Advancements are great. But there is one thing that is a constant and has been systematically getting worse. Hatred. We, humans as a whole are regressing due to hatred. People hate each because of a car, clothes, race, religion, political affiliations, military service, income, sex, if you don't think, believe, or convert the way they do they hate, the list goes on.
Hatred will continue in this way and will just keep getting worse until people are wise enough to get by the words and accept their fellow individual as a person and not an enemy.

Postmodernists question the validity of 19th century and 20th century notions of progress - both on the capitalist and the Marxist side of the spectrum. They argue that both capitalism and Marxism over-emphasize technological achievements and material prosperity while ignoring the value of inner happiness and peace of mind.
At its forty-seventh session, in 1992, the General Assembly decided to convene a World Summit for Social Development at the level of Heads of State or Government (resolution 47/92). The Summit was held at Copenhagen from 6 to 12 March 1995. The item entitled “Implementation of the outcome of the World Summit for Social Development” was included in the agenda of the fiftieth session of the Assembly at the request of Denmark (A/50/192). At the same session, the Assembly decided to hold a special session of the Assembly in 2000 for an overall review and appraisal of the implementation of the outcome of the Summit and to consider further actions and initiatives (resolution 50/161). The twenty-fourth special session of the General Assembly, entitled “World Summit for Social Development and beyond: achieving social development for all in a globalizing world”, was held at Geneva from 26 June to 1 July 2000.
It was acknowledged that the implementation of commitments made during the
Decade had fallen short of expectations and there was evidence of an inverse
correlation between promises made at Copenhagen and the results achieved thus far.
Although the levels of absolute poverty at the global level had been reduced by the
decisive influence of the rapid economic expansion of China and India, overall
progress in poverty eradication had been slow and uneven. In sub-Saharan Africa
and Latin America, poverty reduction had been stagnant and in Western Asia
poverty had actually increased. Emerging trends also suggested that progress on
some social indicators, such as school enrolment and infant mortality, had slowed
down in the past decade.

Psychologically, over the past 50 years, we have progressed at a slow rate, due to all the advancements, as well as different cultural values (slavery abolishment).
But physically, we have regressed due to the advancements of communication and entertainment (videogames, internet) so the health of americans has steadily decreased. (Also, because many kids have eaten too much fast food, our national height average has lowered dramatically over the last 15 years.)

While we have technologically progressed, society as a whole has regressed. Honor is an archaiac term that few hold to, everyone fears everything, there is no adventure, no feeling (look at rap/hip-hop for evidence here), little love, very little ambition, few take pride in their work or themselves, lost sense of community, the list is endless.

I believe that we regressed even if we made fantastic advances in technology and agriculture. Our sense of community and family is almost gone. we dump our parents in homes and our children have become latch key kids because were too busy working to be able to afford all of these new toys that we absolutely have to have. were stressed out and depressed and so are our children because we need to put them in 10 different after school activities. Kids just don't go to play outside anymore we organize play dates for them. we try to control and structure everything and keep up with the Jones. we forgot what the true meaning of happiness and love is.

Regressed ....people now seem to have a sense of entitlement instead of self worth, giving into social hand handouts and political promises. Most people will adopt security over freedom except the rare few that are often criticized for those views.
