Typically, a double-spaced typed page is 250 words, so your paper should be about 1250 words.

500 approx. per page x 5 pages / 2 = 1250

that's for size 12 font, and 1 inch margins - might be more words for smaller writing, etc

hope I helped :)

Well I was told in my english that a typical page is 250 words so 5 pages would be 250x5 or 1250 words

If you're using MS Word:
Have you actually typed a 5 page, double spaced paper and are looking for the number of words? Skip to step 3. Just want to know the number of words in a paper with the limitations above? Start at step 1.

Step 1. Open MS Word. Right click anywhere in the document and press 'Paragraph' in the drop down menu. Find 'line spacing' and select 'double' from its drop down menu.

Step 2. Make sure that the font style and type are what you want. Now type 3 to 4 random sentences. Press Ctrl+A, then Ctrl+C. Now press Ctrl+P until you have 5 pages worth of text.

Step 3. Go to tools and press on word count.

Voila! There's the number of words in your document!

I hope that my over simplification/thoroughness wasn't annoying.

Depends on the level of intellect the writer has. A low level student may have a vocabulary primarily of 4 letter words while a high level student shows off the 7-8 letter words. So you can't have an typical number of words in the paper unless you want to talk about the typical/average student...and then grouping human beings is something best not done.

So in reflection, it really depends on the grade of the class.

If it is in MS Word there is a "word count" in the Tools. It will tell you how many words are in the paper.
