At first when I looked at the statistic figures I was shocked; I still had 5 billion in mind!

I remember when I went to school they told as that the world population would maybe be 5 billion expected around 2007 to 2015!

Should we not worry about this more then tsunami’s volcano's ore even global warming!

Also if it comes to Population Information source from Asian Country's they probably still on the short side!

What will it be in ONLY the next 15 to 20 years? I don't like to imagine its more the frightening!
My prediction; Big problems if this will continue like this and Big conflicts are guarantied!

No one should make a joke about this!
The ones already 70 may not need to worry much! But what’s about the rest? what’s about the children I don’t like to thing about it; what a long way to go ”maybe!!”
Maybe good to put the Children in the governments to give them ones a chance to tell there parents what’s really important!

Yes, it should be our biggest concern. Most of the major threats people worry about most (terrorism, poverty, war, environmental issues, pandemics, energy shortages, etc) can all be traced back to overpopulation, either as a root cause or as a factor that greatly compounds the problem. All of those other things are little more than symptoms compared to over population and over consumption of resources. It needs to be the primary concern for our continued existence, we can either limit our population voluntarily or let nature do it. And nature is generally very effective when it comes to returning populations to a sustainable level. Odd that something considered a basic human right (having as many children as you want to) is possibly the most likely thing to destroy humankind.

As for Craig R's questions...
So have you noticed that your neighbors are closer to you than when it was 5 billion? Yes.

Any trouble buying food at your grocery store now that there are another billion to feed? Not in my area, but I live in that zone people like you only see when you fly over it from NYC to LA. We grow the stuff here. I'm not sure what other areas are doing, but we aren't shipping as much to them because we are using more of it ourselves.

Is all that empty space you fly over when you go from NY to LA looking a lot fuller now? I live there... Yes, absolutely it is much, much fuller.

Predicted 8 billion by 2010, or maybe it was 2020. Either way we are screwed.

Think about this one fact. There are 2 billion Chinese, soon to be 4 billion. For the last fifty years China has been working on their population problem by trying to limit families to one child. Because Chinese culture places more value on male children the society has been selectively skewing the birth survival rate towards males.

So now as we see China becoming an economic global power we are also well aware that in any military conflict they could very easily put a million or two men on the front lines, fast.

Also those men who are willing to fight are defending a country laking in women.

So if the Chinese were ever to decide that there was some resource that they were lacking in, well they might decide just to go use that couple of million man army and just go take whatever it was that they needed.

So let's see what might they need; oil, uranium, farm land, or maybe food. Oh yes, what about women of breeding age.

The earth's population is growing faster than governments can manage. There are too many people and not enough resources to care for all of them. Is that a problem? Obviously, yes. Can anyone do anything about it? No.

Here's the kicker: I believe that with so many people on the earth, history has a greater chance of repeating itself. Think back to all the wars experienced from the 1700's up till now. In 1914, WWI changed the world. Now we are sitting on the edge of cataclysm with the Bird Flu virus, global warming and the question mark of global terrorism.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist or anything like that, and I'm not going to say what's in the future, but I seriously believe we are in for a drastic population reduction. That sounds dark, but history has a way of repeating itself and we all know it.

The only "quick solution" to "this urgent problem" would be analogous to lining up people along a wall and to shoot them. Good luck finding takers for that. Or how about volunteerism? Would you like to apply and help us solving "the problem"?

Thank god all the people who actually have an understanding of these issues have concluded that the world is not going to drown in overpopulation. The world's population will level off at little over 10 billion people (yes, it can be predicted very accurately). There are plenty of energy, resources and enough food for all these people on this planet as long as we make the right decisions and learn how to use our resources wisely.

Obviously, panicking is not a wise response, and I personally do not expect the solutions to come from people who "suddenly discover" the great dangers of overpopulation. I trust those who have been thinking about this for half a century and who have come to relatively benign conclusions, far more.

Nice try, though.

I have noticed that when the population becomes to large nature takes it's course. MSU did a study with rats and found that when the rats outgrew their niche that they either
a)became homosexual
b) became cannabalistic
Not that the world will break out into a zombie crisis but I think momsexuality is actually nature's population control

This is horrible to admitt but plagues and viruses like AIDS are needed for population control.

I think it was the Romans who panicked when their population hit 1,000,000 (or maybe it was 100,000,000). They couldn't imagine how they could feed all those people. Here we are 2000 years later and 6 billion seems like a lot.

So have you noticed that your neighbors are closer to you than when it was 5 billion? Any trouble buying food at your grocery store now that there are another billion to feed? Is all that empty space you fly over when you go from NY to LA looking a lot fuller now? No? then don't worry about it.

there have been many people that have forecast the "doom of mankind" due to overpopulation ---- i recall a study that forecasts due to improving medical conditions world wide more babies will survive to adulthood ---- which means less babies will be conceived --- check the statistics of developed nations they are below replacement rates in many countries ---- i recall that the population will level off about 2050 then start to decline ---- i have great faith in the human spirit to overcome obstacles as they arise
