If we really love freedom, then why do so many people who consider themselves patriotic have a problem with things like gay marriage? Shouldn't people be *free* to marry who they choose?

Glen- good answer. But if you really valued freedom, wouldn't you allow others the freedom to make choices based on their own morals, even if it is not what you would choose for yourself ?

Homosexual marriages differ from many people's core values and beliefs system.
While many agree and support it there are an equal number who do not. It's not a question of conformity -- it's adhering to their own values.
People can staunchly oppose homosexual marriage -- it is a freedom they are entitled to.
Edit; I would let anyone make their own choice. It is not for me, or anyone else, to decide what someone can and can not do. Open homosexualism is still revered as a taboo subject that many, many people do not want to address.
With the setup of out Government the way it is -- ultimately the laws reside with the legislative body of our states and until the Supreme Court either determines that a state is making laws unconstitutionally or the Federal Government(legislative branch) deems otherwise, it will remain the way it is -- decided by our representatives.

That is a very good point, but there can never be absolute freedom, because not everyone wants the same thing. For example one person may want the freedom to smoke in a non smoking building, but another person may want the freedom not to have to inhale second hand smoke in a non smoking building.
The problem with your paticular example is that marriage is a religious instituition, and you could argue that members of a religious instituiton should have the "freedom" to set the rules for their religion as they see fit. Currently the churchs rule is that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. Personally I believe in Civil Unions, where a same sex couple can get the same benefits as a married couple but its not recognized as a marriage.

Some people value conformity, some don't. Some consider the freedom of the US to be the freedom to do what you should; some consider the freedom of the US to be the freedom to do what you want.

I sometimes think this is less a religious question than it is a money question. with marriage you get health insurance ,death benifits (like social security) and property rights. Those are the things that could cost the government and insurance comp some cash. As for gay marriage yes your right , it is a personal choice.

Americans say they value freedom, but it appears that the right-wing values conformity and security over everything else.

I think many value "drive-thrus" more than either of those things, and I doubt a majority of us could define those terms correctly either.

You are free to marry if you are gay, you just can't make it "legal."
