I do not know where you got your information but is not correct. A hundred years ago regional accents extended over large geographic areas, and most people were literate, well informed and read much more than they do today. Have you ever heard of newspapers? Even when I was young people deplored how much time the young spent being entertained and how little we knew, and the trend continues today. The vast improvement in communication is being used for entertainment , and many no longer even learn from their immediate environment because the are walking around in their own world, listening to music with earphones or chatting with friends by cell phones of text messaging.
Economic change is happening slower and slower in the developed world as we become a service economy, because services are not as amenable to improvements in technology as manufacturing. The last 50 years has seem less change in the standard of living than any 50 year period since the industrial revolution and the next fifty will show even less. There will be remarkable changes in countries like India and China as the catch up and if we are lucky Africa also.
