When I went to Munich I bought a watch, I also found some beautiful little wooden product shops about 2 blocks from the Marienplatz - at the square there - turn so the glockenspiel is behind you and walk through the little street ways - I bought a gorgeous hand carved mini-cuckoo clock and some tiny wooden ornaments and toys and gifts - the little painted metal decorative hangings are absolutely gorgeous.

In Munich, you can visit the shopping area over behind the Cathedral... I think it's called Kreunercity... a huge shopping complex... I'm sure you can find something.

In Rome... you can pick up all the naft and natty souvenirs you can stand... there are cheap curios for sale just about everywhere. If you want something special.. go to the Vatican Book store... it's inside the square on the left side facing St. Peters... they have some excellent books in there that you can not buy elsewhere.

I would buy a giant pewter beer mug in munich and a book about the roman empire in Rome. Yes, you can buy a book on Rome anywhere...but it's not like buying it where the events took place. When I was in England, I bought one of Shakespeare's plays while I was in Statford-upon-Avon.
When I was in Dublin I bought a book on Celtic religion.
